Yokohama Giving Away a Truck in Its “Get Trucked Up Giveaway”

M-Yokohama-Tire-Nitro-Circus-Ram-Truck1-1.jpgThe grand prize in Yokohama Tire Corp.’s “Get Trucked Up Giveaway” is a custom-built 2017 Ram 2500 Power Wagon crew cab 4×4 featuring the company’s new Geolandar M/T G003 mud-terrain tires. The contest runs through Oct. 15.

Yokohama is presenting the sweepstakes in conjunction with its marketing partner Nitro Circus Live Pty. Ltd., a global action sports and entertainment company that produces the Nitro World Games. Yokohama is also the exclusive tire of the Nitro Circus Live Tour in the United States through 2019.

The truck made its debut at the Nitro Circus show in San Diego and will be on display at all 20 Nitro Circus Live events across the country through the end of September. A free set of Geolandar M/T G003 tires will be given away at each Nitro Circus Live event.

To enter the contest, go to https://www.yokohamatire.com/truckedup. Earn extra entries by liking Yokohama Tire’s Facebook page and by sharing on Facebook.

The sweepstakes winner will be announced after the close of the contest and will be streamed on Facebook Live. You can also follow Yokohama on Instagram @yokohamatire and Twitter @yokohamatc.

“The grand prize-winning Ram 2500 Power Wagon is a real beauty,” says Fardad Niknam, Yokohama Tire director of LTR segment development. “We partnered with AEV to load the truck with all sorts of cool modifications, including a three-inch dual sport SC lifted suspension, a premium front off-road bumper, 17×8.5 Katla onyx black wheels, and differential covers for the front and rear. The custom livery wrap was designed by Jon Sibal and, of course, it runs on 37×12.50 R17 Yokohama GEOLANDAR M/T G003 tires. It will draw a lot of attention from fans at the Nitro Circus events.”

Niknam says the new M/T tire was created for hardcore off-roaders, outdoor enthusiasts and pickup truck/SUV owners, and is initially available in 37 sizes, ranging from 15- to 20-inch rim diameters. New features on the M/T, which goes on sale in the U.S. July 1, include aggressive sidewall styling, Geo-Shield technology and a special triple-polymer compound.

Yokohama is the exclusive tire of the Nitro Circus Live Tour in the United States and an official sponsor of the Nitro World Games, June 24 at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah. Pirelli’s New Truck Tire Designed for North American Market

M-Pentathlon-45-degree-full-shot-v1-1.jpg

Pirelli’s TP Commercial Solutions LLC division has launched the first tire in the Pentathlon product family. The new Pentathlon D is a premium drive tire for the long haul market in North America.

The company says the new tire features the most advanced Pirelli technology and is tailored to the North American market. The Pentathlon D is a premium offering that gives fleets extremely high mileage, fuel savings, and low emission benefits as a SmartWay-verified tire.

The company says that as the Pentathlon name indicates, the new tire is distinguished by five distinct areas.

1. High mileage: A dual layer tread compound is incorporated into the design for long lasting performance.
2. Energy efficiency: A specialized undertread compound to provide lower rolling resistance, and therefore lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
3. Even wear: The tire’s optimized pattern geometry and 3SB belt evolution ensure durable, even wear.
4. High traction: A directional tread pattern provides excellent grip on wet and dry surfaces.
5. High retreadability: Pirelli’s patented Spiral Advanced Technology for Truck (SATT) technology improves retreadability.

“Pentathlon D provided excellent results in testing against the industry’s most important performance benchmarks of mileage and traction in all conditions. This is a true embodiment of everything the Pirelli brand stands for – high performance, premium quality, innovative technology and industry leadership,” says Clif Armstrong, president of TP Commercial Solutions LLC.

Bridgestone Increases Truck and OTR Prices a 3rd Time in 2017

images

Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations LLC is increasing the prices of its commercial tires in North America.

The company says it will raise prices “up to 8%” on its commercial truck and bus tires and off-the-road tires. The increase will take effect on or before July 1, depending on business unit and product line.

This is the second price increase on Bridgestone products in 2017, resulting in a 16% increase. The company announced its initial round of price hikes in late January, and a few days later extended it to cover the entire Bridgestone portfolio.

Bridgestone follows Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., which announced a second price increase on April 5.

Hankook Expands Commercial Truck Tire Lineup

hankook-logo

Hankook Tire America Corp. has released two tires designed for regional service applications. The new Hankook AH37 and DH37 tires are designed to offer lower rolling resistance and greater fuel efficiency.

Both the AH37 and DH37 feature 3D Kerf Technology, offering better traction, increased mileage and improved tread wear. SmartWay and California Air Resources Board (CARB)-certified, the tires help reduce the impact on the environment, according to Hankook.

The AH37 is a steer / all-position axle tire for regional haul fitments on truck and bus applications. Offering multipurpose performance, the AH37 tire is structurally designed for longer tread life, fuel efficiency and durability in intense driving conditions. The optimized footprint offers improved traction and mileage performance for a smoother ride and better handling. An enhanced kerf design displaces water for outstanding road grip in adverse weather conditions.

Hankook says the DH37 is ideal for commercial fitments on both school buses and regional haul trucks. Designed for extreme mileage and excellent traction in all road conditions, the DH37 features a large footprint and aggressive tread design, which provides outstanding performance in all weather conditions.
“Hankook continues to bring the latest tire technology to the commercial market,” says Brian Sheehey, senior director, Hankook Tire America Corp. “The AH37 and DH37 tires offer a new element of performance and durability to Hankook’s TBR portfolio.”

Both tires will be available for purchase starting in March through Hankook certified dealers

Who Will Pay a Lower Rate in the Truck Tire Tariffs?

M-Tariffs-containership-15

When the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) said its preliminary investigation found evidence of truck and bus tire makers in China dumping tires in the U.S., the agency didn’t specify which tire manufacturers would pay which tariff rate. We’ve now got that information.

On Aug. 29, 2016, the DOC revealed companies would fall into one of two anti-dumping tariff rates: either 20.87% or 22.57%.

The 20.87% rate is levied against imports from companies the DOC refers to as “non-selected respondents eligible for a separate rate.”

The 22.57% rate is for “all other manufacturers in China.” This rate is higher because in all but one instance (Double Coin), the companies didn’t respond to the government’s request for information. (Double Coin is being penalized with the higher rate because it is 72% owned by a government-owned company. Its parent company, Shanghai Huayi Company is fully owned by Shanghai State-Owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, and the DOC says it determined there is “de facto control” over the tire manufacturer.)

Here’s the lengthy list of manufacturers who will pay 20.87% anti-dumping tariff. Keep in mind this tariff is then combined with the previously-approved countervailing duty.

The companies are listed by exporter. Tire producers are listed in parenthesis behind the appropriate exporter’s name. In some cases, a producer is listed multiple times because its products are exported by multiple companies. (Searching for a particular tire company? Michelin Adds 2 Sizes to BF Goodrich K02 Tires

tire-all-terrain-t-a-ko2-hero.png

Michelin North America Inc. has released two new sizes of the BFGoodrich brand All-Terrain T/A KO2 tire. The additions are LT255/75R17 for the Jeep Wrangler and the 35×12.50R20 replacement tire for light trucks.

The tire is now available in 64 sizes. Since its launched in late 2014, more than 5.3 million KO2 tires have been sold in North America, according to Michelin.

The company says the KO2 delivers exceptional toughness, tread life and traction for traversing harsh conditions, including gravel, dirt, rock, mud and snow. Key features include tougher sidewalls that are up to 20% tougher than the predecessor tire due to CoreGard technology. The company says the technology results in split and bruise-resistant sidewall rubber and a thicker, extended shoulder that prevent sidewall failures.

The tire also has longer tread life with a new design and rubber formulation that helps it last twice as long on gravel and 15% longer on asphalt than the tire it replaced. In addition, the tread rubber has been optimally blended to reduce chips and tears on gravel.

The KO2 also has a range of tread features for better mud and snow traction. The improvements to the all-terrain performance include 10% greater traction in the mud and 19% greater traction in the snow compared to the previous-generation KO tire.

The all-season tire carries the 3 Peak Mountain Snowflake symbol, indicating that the KO2 exceeds the Rubber Manufacturer Association’s severe snow traction requirements.

The KO2 fits a range of vehicles, including Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, Dodge, Jeep, Toyota and Nissan pickup trucks and SUVs as well as plus fitments for a wide variety of vehicles.

United Steelworkers Union Happy With DOC 40% Tariff on China Built Tires

health-safety-environment

The United Steelworkers (USW) union is praising the U.S. Department of Commerce’s (DOC) preliminary anti-dumping (AD) determination of tariffs of at least 20% on truck and bus tire imports from China.

The DOC issued its preliminary determination on Aug. 29. Importers will need to start posting cash deposits or bonds to offset dumping by Chinese tire producers at margins ranging from 20.87% to 22.57%. Preliminary countervailing duty margins were announced June 28 with margins of 17.06 to 23.38%.

When combined, the AD and CVD margins are nearly 40% on the truck and bus tire imports from China. The final USDOC rulings are expected in January 2017 with a final U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) determination next March.

The USW filed the initial petition on Jan. 29, 2016, that began the trade investigation.

In a statement issued by the USW, Leo Gerard, international president, said: “The government investigators and our trade counsel have been diligent in handling this massive trade case involving more than $1 billion value of truck and bus tire imports from China in 2015, increasing market share each of the last three years at the expense of American producers and USW tire production workers.”

He added, “Unfair truck tire imports from China have denied our domestic industry the opportunity to share in job increases during a period of robust demand growth.”

The chair of the union’s national rubber tire bargaining conference, USW International Secretary-Treasurer Stan Johnson, said: “Again and again China has been shown to benefit from massive subsidies and to engage in widespread dumping in order to gain market share at the expense of American jobs. Chinese truck tire imports have grown from 6.3 million in 2012 to 8.9 million in 2015 with an increased share of consumption of more than 36% by 2014.”

The USW represents 6,000 workers at five facilities in the U.S. that account for more than two-thirds of domestic capacity to produce truck and bus tires. The tire production facilities are operated by Bridgestone-Firestone, Goodyear and Sumitomo, and they are located in LaVergne and Warren County, Tenn., Buffalo, N.Y., Danville, Va., and Topeka, Kan.

Not only will Nitto hit the road with the Diamond-selling country music duo, but it has also built a special Florida Georgia Line-themed vehicle to introduce its newest light-truck tire – the Ridge Grappler.

Dirt roads and four wheel drives are a staple of country music and the lifestyle that inspires it, as Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley of Florida Georgia Line can attest. Not only are these recurring themes in many of their songs, but both artists also have their own customized trucks. Nitto says this makes the group’s 2016 tour the perfect launching point for its latest addition to the Grappler lineup.

“We couldn’t be more excited to be the presenting sponsors of Florida Georgia Line’s 2016 tour,” says Stephen Leu, brand publishing manager for Nitto Tire. “Country music and trucks go hand-in-hand and we couldn’t think of a better way to launch the newest tire in our popular Grappler lineup.”

In addition to sponsoring the concert series, Nitto also built a special Florida Georgia Line truck that was unveiled June 11, 2016, at the CMA Fest show in Nashville, Tenn., giving attendees an exclusive first look at the all-new Ridge Grappler. Fans of Nitto Tire and Florida Georgia Line also will have a chance to enter a drawing to win the truck online, or at each of the tour’s stops.

“Being truck enthusiasts ourselves, we are thrilled to partner with Nitto Tire for our tour,” says Tyler Hubbard of Florida Georgia Line.

Brian Kelley says, “Getting our own FGL inspired truck is incredible! We are honored and can’t wait for one of our fans to drive away in it.”

DOC: 40% Tariffs Due on Chinese Truck Tires

China_flag_map

The U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) says truck and bus tire manufacturers in China are dumping tires in the U.S. at less than fair market value, and those tires should be subject to tariffs of at least 20%. The tariffs are retroactive.

Chinese truck and bus tires are benefitting from government subsidies and dumping in the U.S., the DOC has found in its preliminary investigations. The DOC’s final ruling is expected Jan. 17, 2017.
The DOC announced its preliminary results Aug. 29, 2016.
In every tariff investigation, the DOC selects manufacturers to serve as mandatory respondents. Those companies then provide data and answer questions, and those figures and answers serve as the basis and gauge for the industry as a whole. Other manufacturers also may volunteer to provide their own data throughout the investigation as well.

In the truck and bus tire investigation, Prinx Chengshan (Shandong) Tire Co. Ltd. and Double Coin Holdings Ltd. were the mandatory respondents.

Here are the rates:

Tire manufacturer Rate
Prinx Chengshan 20.87%
Non-selected separate rate respondents 20.87%
Rate for all other manufacturers in China 22.57%
Commerce preliminarily found Double Coin “is not eligible for a separate rate and is part of the China-wide entity.”

The higher rate for the other manufacturers in China is “due to their failure to respond to Commerce’s requests for information.”

The DOC says there was evidence that truck and bus tires were dumped in the U.S. soon after the United Steelworkers sought the investigation in January, and as a result the U.S. Customs and Border Protection will be instructed to retroactively impose the tariffs on products. The effective date will be 90 days prior to the forthcoming publication of this preliminary determination in the Federal Register. (It usually takes about a week for the Federal Register notice to be published, so the tariff retroactive date likely will be around June 7.)

These anti-dumping tariffs are on top of the countervailing tariffs the DOC preliminarily approved in June. Adding the two tariffs together determines the full penalty. For Double Coin, for example, it’s 39.63%. Review the countervailing tariff details here.

For most manufacturers, the combined rate will be above 40%.
The DOC cites U.S. Census Bureau data and says 8.9 million truck and bus tires were imported into the U.S. from China in 2015. Those tires are valued at more than $1 billion.

DOC Tariffs on OTR Tires from India

M-Tariffs-containership-15

The U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) has preliminarily determined that off-the-road tires imported from India and Sri Lanka are benefitting from subsidies, and should be subject to countervailing tariffs.

In its India investigation, Commerce calculated a subsidy rate of 4.7 % for Balkrishna Industries Ltd., and a subsidy rate of 7.64% for ATC Tires Private Ltd., a part of Alliance Tire Group. All other producers and exporters of OTR tires in India have been assigned a preliminary subsidy rate of 6.17%.
As for the Sri Lanka investigation, a subsidy rate of 2.9% has been assigned to all exporters and producers, including Camso Loadstar.

And because the DOC has determined that “critical circumstances” exist with respect to certain exporters from both countries, the tariffs are retroactive, meaning the effective date of these tariffs is already in effect. The DOC first will publish these findings in the Federal Register — likely in the next week — and then it will count back 90 days. That date will signal the start date for U.S. Customs and Border Protection to begin collecting the tariffs.

What’s next?

The DOC will continue its investigation, and will announce its final determinations on Oct. 28. There’s always a chance that ruling will be delayed however, since there are opportunities for the petitioners (Titan Tire Corp. and the United Steelworkers) to request an extension.

If the DOC does affirm its preliminary ruling at the final stage, then the U.S. International Trade Commission will vote once again to confirm that OTR tires from India and/or Sri Lanka are materially injuring, or threatening injury, to the U.S. OTR tire industry.

If either agency changes its mind, the countervailing tariffs will be canceled.

The ITC is scheduled to issue its final ruling 45 days after the DOC makes its final determinations — on Dec. 12.

Read the DOC’s fact sheet here.

Keep in mind, however, that this represents only one part of the tariff question being investigated by the DOC. The agency conducts separate investigations of whether products are benefitting from subsidies, and whether products are being dumped in the domestic market at too-low prices. The DOC is scheduled to announce the preliminary results of its dumping investigation of OTR tires on Aug. 11.

It will get slightly easier to keep track of the OTR tire tariff after that. The DOC has agreed to align the two investigations, and release its final findings in both the countervailing and anti-dumping cases on the same date in October.
