TitanGrizzBrandsLogo

Titan International Inc. has reached tentative agreements with the United Steelworkers (USW) unions representing its plants in Des Moines, Iowa; Bryan, Ohio; and Freeport, Ill. Votes are expected in the coming weeks.

Paul Reitz, CEO and president of Titan, announced the tentative agreements during the company’s first-quarter earnings call on May 4, 2017. The current labor agreements expired in November 2016, and operations at the plants have continued while both sides worked on negotiations.

“Titan has a longstanding, good relationship with the USW, as evidenced over the past couple of years when we worked closely together to present cases to the International Trade Commission (ITC) regarding OTR tires from China, India and Sri Lanka.,” Reitz said. “Their support in these cases was greatly appreciated and instrumental in the successful determinations from the ITC. For more than 20 years, we’ve viewed the USW and its members as an integral part of the Titan team and we appreciate their hard work in building quality tires day-in and day-out at our North American tire plants.”

Nokian Introduces New Winter Tires for 2017

M-Nokian-Hakkapeliitta-9-Functional-Studding-2-1.jpg

Nokian Tyres plc is bringing a new Hakkapeliitta tire to the winter tire market in 2017. Actually, it’s offering two: the Hakkapeliitta 9 for passenger cars, and the Hakkapeliitta 9 SUV.
Nokian says the tire features new stud technology, a new tread pattern, new tire structure, and a new rubber compound. The tire wil be available in fall 2017.
Tthe Hakkapeliitta 9 showcases the new adaptive Nokian functional stud concept, which features two designs of studs on the tire for use during specific driving conditions, such as braking or accelerating and cornering, which Nokian says ensures optimal traction in all winter conditions.

The tire provides longitudinal and lateral grip on icy and snowy driving surfaces, and behaves in a controlled and logical manner, the company says. The new tread pattern offers stable bare-road handling, a comfortably silent ride and rolls lighter than previous Hakkapeliitta generations resulting in improved fuel economy.

“As we’ve seen during the past few months, the snow and ice of winter results in dangerous driving conditions on the roads,” says Tommi Heinonen, president of Nokian Tyres North America. “Leveraging 80 years and millions of miles driven on Hakkapeliittas, our team developed the safest, most comfortable winter tire that we can’t wait to bring to drivers throughout North America.”

All about the studs

Nokian spent four years and countless miles of testing developing its newest flagship product, and it was fine-tuned to master extreme conditions at the tire maker’s White Hell testing center located north of the Arctic Circle in Ivalo, Finland.

“One of our starting points was to develop a completely new studded tire that combines balanced longitudinal and lateral grip with eco-friendliness,” says Juha Pirhonen, vice president of research and development for Nokian. “Unique to the Hakkapeliitta 9, the new stud technology features a dedicated, tailored stud for the center of the tread and a separate stud for the shoulder areas.”
The studs in the center area maximize longitudinal grip during acceleration and braking; and the tire is supported by the shape of the studs’ body, lower flange and hard metal center. The longitudinally wide hard metal pin on the center studs offers a maximum grip surface for the best possible longitudinal grip.
“The upper part of the stud body is bevelled, which allows the stud to penetrate even deeper into the ice than before; this further improves braking grip and lateral grip,” says Pirhonen.

The shoulder studs have been designed to provide lateral grip, which is especially important when cornering on slippery surfaces. The stud body and flange are different from the center studs, and the triaxial hard metal pin has been designed to withstand lateral forces. When cornering, the studs will encounter maximal surface-area, which improves lateral grip. This technical innovation offers improved, precise handling under slippery conditions, the company says.

In an effort to produce safer, more eco-friendly tires, Nokian developed the Eco Stud 9 concept for use in the Hakkapeliitta 9. The Eco Stud 9 concept is incorporated into both the center rib and shoulder studs to reduce road wear and ensure a quiet ride. The technology consists of an Eco Stud cushion to dampen road contact, an air space in the middle of the lower flange for reduced stud impact and bevelled hard metal tips to distribute the stud’s impact force across a wider area.

Designed for all road conditions

In addition to its ice grip, the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9 performs on snowy and dry roads. The tread pattern is heavily grooved with self-locking 3D sipes allowing the tire to respond quickly and sensitively to steering for improved handling. The self-locking sipes lock the tread blocks firmly together on road contact, which results in fluent driving during cornering and evasions.

Dense siping combined with snow grip boosters on both sides of the middle blocks in the center of the tread provides more sharp edges for improved snow grip in both the longitudinal and lateral directions. The aggressive deep snow boosters on the shoulder areas provide additional grip when driving in deep snow.
The Hakkapeliitta 9 features a new type of eco-friendly winter tread compound, which contains silica and canola oil for improved tear resistance, natural rubber and the new Green Elasto Proof biomaterial that keeps the compound elastic at low temperatures. Nokian says the compound’s chemical bonds provide a sturdy grip year after year, even as the miles add up.
Because a large amount of winter driving takes place on bare roads, Nokian fitted the Hakkapeliitta 9 with its stability support network tread pattern, where the tread support network is rigid and unified at the bottom of the pattern getting more grooves and sipes where the rubber meets the road.

The strong ultra high tensile steel belt structure makes the structure light but hard, providing precise handling even at higher speeds. The sturdy structure also helps prevent punctures and the new special clinch rubber compound in the bead area improves driving comfort and durability.

The Hakkapeliitta 9 also features Nokian’s driving safety indicator to indicate remaining tread, and the snowflake symbol or winter safety indicator to indicate when it is recommended to replace tires.

Sizing and specifications

The Hakkapeliitta 9 is designed for passenger vehicles, and covers 52 sizes from 14 to 20 inches. Most are marked XL for the highest possible load capacity in that particular size.

The Hakkapeliitta 9 SUV comes in 51 sizes from 16 to 21 inches and features the aramid sidewall technology, which uses aramid fibre, to optimize durability. The selection also offers several products that employ Flat Run technology or that are marked XL for the highest possible load capacity.

Goodyear’s Concept Tire Recognized as one of the Years Best Inventions

M-Goodyear-blimp-BBMOffice-2-15Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.’s Eagle-360 concept tire has been named one of Time magazine’s “Best Inventions of the Year 2016.”

“By steadily reducing the driver interaction and intervention in self-driving vehicles, tires will play an even more important role as the primary link to the road,” says Goodyear’s Chief Technical Officer Joe Zekoski. “Goodyear’s concept tires play a dual role in that future both as creative platforms to push the boundaries of conventional thinking and testbeds for next-generation technologies.”

Each year, Time magazine’s technology editors list the year’s “best inventions that are making the world better, smarter and—in some cases—a little more fun.” This year’s list includes 25 inventions. In addition to Goodyear’s Eagle-360 concept, the list includes a virtual reality headset, shoes that lace themselves, a solar roof collaboration between Tesla and SolarCity, and the Chevy Bolt electric vehicle.

The Goodyear Eagle-360 is a spherical-shaped design concept tire that would provide self-driving cars ultimate maneuverability, connectivity and biomimicry to increase safety. “Although the Eagle-360 is a future concept, it represents an essential aspect of Goodyear’s innovation strategy and our vision for smart and safe mobility,” says Zekoski.

Onmi United Passes the One Million Mark to Fight Against Breast Cancer

Breast-Cancer-Ribbon5-200x300.jpg

Over the last five years, the Radar tire brand has raised more than $1 million to fight breast cancer. And Omni United (S) Pte. Ltd., owner and distributor of the Radar private brand, plans to continue the fight with the help of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF).
“Giving back is one of the corporate values upon which we have built Omni United and Radar tires,” says GS Sareen, founder and CEO of Omni United. “It is one of my most cherished corporate values, less about social responsibility and more about running our company responsibly.”

“Our partnership with the BCRF has allowed us and, indirectly, also our customers, to contribute in a meaningful way to fund research towards the prevention and cure of breast cancer, a disease that has touched so many in our communities and among the friends and families of our employees, customers, suppliers and friends. We will continue supporting the BCRF in their relentless endeavor of advancing research towards finding a cure for breast cancer.”

In 2011 Omni launched the “Mobilizing Hope” campaign, a corporate alliance with the BCRF that has included donations for each Radar tire sold and one-off contributions. To date this campaign has contributed more than $1 million, which has funded over 21,000 hours of some of the world’s most promising and innovative research toward preventing and curing breast cancer.

Besides monetary contributions to the BCRF over the last five years, Omni United and Radar tires have sponsored and undertaken numerous initiatives to spread awareness for this cause, including:

* launching a limited edition “pink sidewall” tire, sold through Sears Auto Centers;

* encouraging their customers, tire distributors, dealers and retailers throughout the world to support the Mobilizing Hope campaign by providing them with in store displays, pink ribbons and other awareness materials to distribute among customers;

* displaying the logo of the BCRF on all the racing cars and gear of the Radar tire motorsports teams;

* supporting the BCRF in all international tire fairs and other events in which Omni and Radar tires participate.

“Our corporate partnership with Omni and the team has been rewarding and innovative in bringing a predominately female cause into a mostly male environment, the world of tires,” says Myra Biblowit, BCRF president. “We are delighted to reach this 5-year milestone and grateful for the ongoing support from Omni, which has helped us fund some critical research.”

This year Radar’s brand ambassador, LPGA golfer Jodi Ewart Shadoff, will further increase awareness of this cause and of the work of the BCRF by wearing pink gear and using a specially designed pink golf club bag in all the October tournaments in which she is due to participate, including the Fubon LPGA Taiwan Championship in Taipei from Oct. 6-9; the LPGA Keb Hana Bank Championship in Incheon, South Korea, from Oct. 13-16; and the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur from Oct. 27-30.

Radar is the flagship brand of Singapore-based Omni United, which does business in the United States as Omni United USA. All Radar tires have distinct labeling identifying the product as supportive of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. This includes all of Radar’s new products: the Dimax R8+, Dimax AS 8, Renegade A/T 5 and Renegade R7 M/T.

Alliance Flotation Tire are Fitted to the Latest Model Manure Tanks

M-AllianceManureTankTires-LR-1.jpg

Alliance Tire Group’s new 393 Agri-Transport flotation radial 35.5R32 is the original equipment fitment for Nuhn Industries Ltd.’s latest model manure spreaders.

Alliance says that when Nuhn Industries set out to build its most advanced manure spreaders—which carry 71,000 to 80,000 pounds of manure at a time—the company’s engineers knew how much of the new models’ success would come down to the tires. The company’s owners found their solution in the new 393 Agri-Transport flotation radial from Alliance Tire. Alliance says the new flotation tire is engineered and built to meet the growing need for huge-capacity tires.

The Nuhn Electra-Steer 8500 and 9500 are designed to meet the high demands of professional manure haulers and leading livestock operations, according to Alliance. They are crossover systems, each unit equipped to load itself with an onboard vacuum pump and to discharge manure efficiently with a high-volume pump.

Ian Nuhn, vice president of Nuhn Industries in Sebringville, Ontario, and designer of the new spreaders, says tires were the vital, missing link. Heavy loads, road speeds up to 40 mph, and the need to operate in muddy fields, stubble, pasture, gravel and pavement all demand a tough, versatile tire.

Nuhn and his father, Dennis, zeroed in on the Alliance 393 Agri-Transport flotation radial 35.5R32. The Alliance 393 tread has a very high rubber-to-void ratio for smooth travel over the road and long wear. Alliance Tire says the 393 Agri-Transport flotation tire has sturdy, heat-minimizing sidewalls and steel radial belts that minimize road squirm, which improves tread life and road performance, and reduce rolling resistance, which boosts fuel economy.

In addition, the Agri-Transport 393’s aggressive, directional block tread design provides traction in the field and excellent self-cleaning, according to Alliance Tire.

Teamwork is at the heart of the relationship between Alliance and Nuhn, says Bruce Besancon, vice president of marketing at Alliance Tire Americas Inc.

“Dennis and Ian are more than just customers; they are collaborators, working closely with us to develop better manure handling solutions for their customers,” Besancon says. “At ATG we work every day with innovators like the Nuhns to bring great new agricultural technology to the market.”

DOC Changes To Higher Tariffs on Truck Tires Imported From China

The U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) has admitted to a miscalculation in its preliminary anti-dumping tariff rate for truck and bus tires imported from China. As a result, the rates for every manufacturer and importer are increasing to 30.36%, which is nearly 10 points higher than the initial calculation.
d
The DOC has recalculated its preliminary anti-dumping tariff rate to account for two errors that affected the initial figure.

The change stems from two fine details that were used to establish the rate for Prinx Chengshan (Shandong) Tire Co. Ltd. One is related to using a per-kilogram basis instead of a per-piece basis in the calculation; another refers to not using a weight average when reconstructing control numbers.
The result is what the DOC calls a significant ministerial error, which it defines as a mathematical or clerical error that “would result in a change of at least five absolute percentage points, but not less than 25% of the weighted average dumping margin.”

As it relates to this anti-dumping tariff, the recalculated rate for Prinx Chengshan is 30.36%, up from 20.87%.

Keep in mind, the anti-dumping rate is only half of the tariff equation.

There are two ongoing investigations related to truck and bus tires from China, and the two rates are combined and levied on all shipments. These anti-dumping tariffs are added to the countervailing tariffs, which are imposed to account for subsidies the companies are receiving from the Chinese government. The countervailing tariffs vary slightly by producer: 17.06% for Double Coin Holdings Ltd.; 23.38% for Guizhou Tyre Co Ltd.; and 20.22% for all other importers.

But the net effect is that most truck and bus tires from China will be assessed a 50.58% tariff.
(Double Coin’s combined rate is 47.42% and Guizhou Tyre’s combined rate is 53.74%.)

These figures represent the preliminary phase of both tariff investigations. The DOC continues to investigate and is scheduled to make its final ruling Nov. 9, and the International Trade Commission is scheduled to hold a final hearing on the investigation Jan. 24, 2017.

Michelin Adds 2 Sizes to BF Goodrich K02 Tires

tire-all-terrain-t-a-ko2-hero.png

Michelin North America Inc. has released two new sizes of the BFGoodrich brand All-Terrain T/A KO2 tire. The additions are LT255/75R17 for the Jeep Wrangler and the 35×12.50R20 replacement tire for light trucks.

The tire is now available in 64 sizes. Since its launched in late 2014, more than 5.3 million KO2 tires have been sold in North America, according to Michelin.

The company says the KO2 delivers exceptional toughness, tread life and traction for traversing harsh conditions, including gravel, dirt, rock, mud and snow. Key features include tougher sidewalls that are up to 20% tougher than the predecessor tire due to CoreGard technology. The company says the technology results in split and bruise-resistant sidewall rubber and a thicker, extended shoulder that prevent sidewall failures.

The tire also has longer tread life with a new design and rubber formulation that helps it last twice as long on gravel and 15% longer on asphalt than the tire it replaced. In addition, the tread rubber has been optimally blended to reduce chips and tears on gravel.

The KO2 also has a range of tread features for better mud and snow traction. The improvements to the all-terrain performance include 10% greater traction in the mud and 19% greater traction in the snow compared to the previous-generation KO tire.

The all-season tire carries the 3 Peak Mountain Snowflake symbol, indicating that the KO2 exceeds the Rubber Manufacturer Association’s severe snow traction requirements.

The KO2 fits a range of vehicles, including Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, Dodge, Jeep, Toyota and Nissan pickup trucks and SUVs as well as plus fitments for a wide variety of vehicles.
