The Car Care Council says Fall Car Care Month in October is the perfect time to reach out to your community and remind them of the benefits of auto care while helping your business at the same time.

Giti Tire to Recall 400,000 Tires

Giti Tire (USA) Ltd. is recalling certain Primewell Valera Touring II replacement passenger car tires in six sizes. The potential number of units affected is 394,378.

According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Office of Defects Investigation, the affected tires may develop cracks in the lower sidewall, potentially resulting in a loss of air. “A loss of air pressure may result in sudden tire failure, increasing the risk of a crash.”

The sizes being recalled are: 185/65R14 86H, 195/60R15 88H, 205/55R16 91H, 205/60R16 92V, 215/60R17 96H and 235/60R17 102T.

The NHTSA Recall ID Number is 17T013. This is the second recall of certain Primewell Valera Touring II sizes.

Owners of the recalled tires will be notified by mail about the recall and will be directed to go to the retailer where the tires were purchased for a free replacement. Giti will replace tires as follows: If one or two tires were purchased, two tires will be replaced; if three or four tires were purchased, four tires will be replaced.

Kenda Recalls 696 Kentica Tires

kr17.jpgAmerican Kenda Rubber Industrial Co. is recalling nearly 700 Kenda Kenetica tires, size P235/75R15 105S KR17. The tires may have a void between the top steel belt and the undertread.

Kenda says 696 tires were affected. The tires were produced between Dec. 23, 2016, and Dec. 26, 2016. They have a void between the top steel belkt and tire undertread located at the overlapped steel belt splice. This was cuased by improper machine set up, the company says in filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Durability testing on Jan 17, 2017, on tires with the void indicated the void did not cause a tread separation, but a recall is being initiated as a preventative measure.

Kenda believes 78% of the 696 tires have the void. The tires are Kenda Part. No. 170018 235/75R15 KR 17, with the DOT No. K3D5ANA5116 and K3D5ANA5216.

The company says it shipped 543 of the tires to Hesselbein Tire in Tulsa, Okla., and 153 tires to Max Finkelstein in Westampton, N.J. After shipment Kenda determined 542 of the tires didn’t pass production inspection and should not be in service.

Dealers need to identify the affected tires with the manufacturer ID label on the inner liner of the tire. Tires with these numbers should be replaced and scrapped.

Tire distrubutors are asked to provide Kenda with a list of retailers who may have been shipped the affected part number after Feb. 1, 2017. If a distributor has any of these tires remaining in its inventory, Kenda asks that it remove them from inventory and return them to the manufacturer.

Tire retailers are asked to provide Kenda consumer contact information for consumers who may have purchased the affected product after Feb. 1. If a retailer has any of these tires remaining in inventory, Kenda asks that they contact Laura Garcia at (614) 729-7877 for return instructions.

After contacting consumers who may have purchases the affected tires, Kenda asks retailers to demount the tire and check the inner liner for the manufacturer code. If it does not match one of the above numbers, the retailer should re-mount and balance the tire. Kenda will reimburse the dealer for the service and provide the consumer with a $25 gift certificate.

If the manufacturer code does match, the tire should be replaced with the new 235/75R15 KR17 (Part No. 170018) and mount and balance the tire. Kenda will reimburse the dealer for the service and provide the consumer with a $25 gift certificate.

Cooper Recalls Discoverer M+S Sport Tires

cooper-logo1.pngCooper Tire & Rubber Co. is recalling certain Discover M+S Sport tires in 15- through 19-inch sizes. The potential number of units affected is 7,067.

According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Office of Defects Investigation, these tires may be marked with the Alpine Symbol (also known as the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol) but do not meet the traction requirements for snow tires. “As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 139, ‘New Pneumatic Radial Tires for Light Vehicles.’

“The affected tires may not provide the expected traction or performance in snow conditions, increasing the risk of a crash.”

The sizes being recalled are:

15-inch: 235/75R15.

16-inch: 255/65R16, 215/70R16, 225/70R16, 235/70R16, 245/70R16 and 265/70R16.

17-inch: 255/60R17, 225/65R17, 235/65R17 and 265/65R17.

18-inch: 255/55R18 and 235/60R18.

19-inch: 255/50R19.

The NHTSA Recall ID Number is 17T003.

Cooper will notify owners, and dealers will replace all the affected tires with tires from a different brand line, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin Feb. 24, 2017. Owners may contact Cooper customer service at (800) 854-6288. Cooper’s number for this recall is 166.

Michelin Takes Vehicle Safety to the Next Level

3.3.1.rolling-tire140512Michelin North America Inc. and the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the global governing body for motorsports, have secured the commitments of 40 U.S. states and the District of Columbia to include standard tire-safety information in driver’s manuals.

The curriculum is part of Michelin’s Beyond the Driving Test program.

The 40-state achievement comes as the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA), which represents officials in states, provinces and territories engaged in the administration and enforcement of driver and motor vehicle laws in the United States and Canada, releases its updated Best Practices for its members to include consistent language for proper tire pressure and tread depth.

“Even seasoned drivers rarely think about the condition of their tires,” says Pete Selleck, chairman and president of Michelin North America. “This issue is compounded when the driver has little experience behind the wheel. That’s why Beyond the Driving Test has resonated so strongly across the country with teens, parents, educators and lawmakers.”

The updated AAMVA recommendation features simple instructions for tire safety. To check for proper tire pressure, AAMVA recommends monthly use of a reliable tire pressure gauge while referring to the recommended pounds per square inch (psi) listed in the vehicle owner’s manual or on the driver’s-side door jamb of the vehicle. To ensure a safe tire tread depth, AAMVA recommends the penny test, which enables drivers to easily check for a safe tread depth of at least 2/32-inch.

Michelin launched the Beyond the Driving Test program in 2014 with the FIA to improve road safety in the United States. The program’s objective is securing the commitments of all 50 states to include consistent tire safety information in state driver’s manuals by 2020. Michelin has also created an accredited tire safety education module for driving instructors with the American Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association (ADTSEA).

Since launching the tire safety curriculum in July 2015, Michelin and ADTSEA have trained more than 700 driving instructors, reaching an estimated 200,000 teen drivers through tire safety workshops and special events nationwide. Michelin will feature Beyond the Driving Test at the upcoming Lifesavers conference held March 26-28 in Charlotte, N.C.

Later this month, Michelin and FIA will be inducted into the PR News CSR Hall of Fame, which recognizes companies or brands for the impact of multi-year CSR programs. Beyond the Driving Test’s teen YouTube influencer campaign was named the 2016 Community Relations Campaign of the year by PR Week in March 2016 and recognized with three Public Relations Society of America 2016 Silver Anvil Awards. In total to date, Beyond the Driving Test has received 20 national and regional awards among public relations, community service and corporate social responsibility programs.

They affect your car’s handling, ride, braking and safety. But most people don’t give much thought to them.

Eighty-three percent of drivers aren’t “tire smart” (i.e., they don’t know how to properly check tire pressure), according to a 2015 survey from the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA).

You may be thinking, Tires haven’t changed since I bought my first set. Wrong! Since they carry you and your car around on the road, taking proper care of them is one of the most important safety factors that also happens to be the most overlooked. Here, we deflate the top five tire myths to make sure you know your way around on four wheels.

Myth #1: All Cars Come With Spare Tires
This used to be standard, but not anymore. For space-saving reasons and fuel efficiency, approximately one in three new cars don’t come with a spare tire in the trunk. Instead, you’ll get a “temporary mobility kit” with a tire sealant and a tire inflator or run-flat tires, says Maryland-based master mechanic and automotive radio show host, Pat Goss. If your tire is punctured, apply the sealant through the valve stem then use the inflator to re-inflate it, he explains. The downside? If the damage is more severe than a tiny hole (think nail size), the mobility kit probably isn’t going to cut it and you’ll have to be towed (GEICO’s mobile app makes it a cinch to request emergency roadside assistance.). Go check your trunk now, so you’re not surprised in an emergency.

Myth #2: The Correct Tire Pressure Is Listed On The Tire Sidewall
Half of all drivers believe this is where you should look to find out the ideal tire inflation pressure number. But these numbers actually tell you what size and kind of tire you have as well as the maximum cold inflation PSI the tire is rated for—not the recommended pressure for your vehicle. That information is actually listed on a label inside the vehicle’s driver-side door or in the owner’s manual.

Myth #3: A Tire-Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Ensures That Your Tires Are Always Good To Go
A tire-pressure monitoring system electronically tracks and displays tire pressure via a gauge, pictogram display or a warning light on your vehicle’s dashboard. “These have lulled most drivers into believing that if the warning signal is off, everything is fine,” says Goss. Since a signal is only triggered when tires lose 25 percent of their inflation pressure (aka “dangerously low” tire pressure), you could be driving on tires that are underinflated enough to cause unnecessary wear, waste fuel and in some cases, decrease cornering ability while increasing stopping distances. Goss advises that you should check tire pressure every 30 days the old-fashioned way: manually, with a tire pressure gauge. (Need a refresher? Myth #4: You Should Rotate Your Tires About Once A Year
Not exactly. Tire rotation should be performed every 5,000 to 8,000 miles, which also coincides with the typical oil change recommendation. So the easiest way to ensure this happens is to get both done at the same time, says Goss. Another way to keep track? “Most cars today have dual trip meters, so you can set one trip meter to zero when the oil is changed or the tires are rotated and wait for it to reach the desired miles,” says Goss.

Myth #5: Never Continue Driving If You Experience A Flat
Run-flat tires—which let you keep driving after a puncture so you can make it to an auto shop—are becoming more popular. “Many manufacturers are using them because the additional cost of four run-flats is less than the cost of a spare tire, wheel and jack,” says Goss. Run-flats vary as to how far they can be driven and at what speed, but generally speaking they can be driven for up to 50 miles at a reduced speed (usually about 50 miles per hour), he explains. You can tell if your car has run-flats by looking inside the driver’s door, in your owner’s manual or checking the tire sidewall for one of the following codes: RFT, DSST, ROF, RFT, EMT, XRP, ZP or ZPS.

5 Signs That You Need New Tires

 

Over-inflation

Take it from former race-car driver Johnny Unser — checking for telltale warnings of a worn-out tire is more important than you think.

“Checking your tires is like going to the dentist,” says Unser, five-time veteran of the Indy 500. “It’s something we don’t do often enough, that we put off until we absolutely have to.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), tire failure causes around 11,000 car crashes each year. Both Unser and the NHTSA recommend doing a quick tire inspection once a month.

Here’s What To Look For:
Bulges, gouges or cracks
When a tire deflates, it bulges at the sides. Unser says this is a sign of low tire pressure or a slow air leak. “If you see cracks in the sidewall, gouges or anything that looks odd, take it in to your dealer and have them look at it.”
Tread wear
The old-school penny test is one way to check for when you need to get new tires: Place a penny into the tread, with Lincoln’s head pointing down. If you can still see the top of his noggin, the tread is dangerously low. Most modern tires, however, have wear bars: bits of rubber woven into the pattern at a specific depth. “You can find the wear bars that go across the groove, and if the tread pattern is worn down to that wear bar, you need to replace your tire,” says Unser.
Tire pressure
Tires deflate at a rate of about one pound per square inch (PSI) per month. “You’re not going to wear your tires down in a month,” Unser says, “but you should check that you have the right inflation pressure.”
Temperature
Tire pressure drops in extreme cold. The challenge in summer, says Unser, is “excessive heat buildup in the tire.” If you’re heading out on a road trip with an underinflated tire, it will generate more heat and wear out faster.
Vibration
Watch out for vibration or thumping when you’re driving. If it feels like it’s coming from under the seats, the rear tires may be out of balance. Vibration from the steering wheel could indicate suspension issues. Unser says anything less than a smooth ride means you should take your car in to the dealer.
When it’s time to replace your tires, Unser recommends doing so in pairs or all four at a time for better performance and traction and, ultimately, a safer ride.

Michelin X Works Recalls XYZ Tires

Michelin North America Inc. is recalling certain Michelin X Works XZY tires that lack the required DOT symbol and load range letter designation.

The recall affects tire size 315/80R22.5 156/150K, manufactured from Jan. 1, 2011, to July 31, 2015, and includes a potential 247 tires.

Without the proper markings the tires fail to conform to the requirements of U.S Code 30112 and Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 119, “New Pneumatic Tires for Motor Vehicles with a GVWR of more than 4,536 kilograms (10,000 pounds) and Motorcycles.”

Michelin will notify owners and will either correct the tires by permanently applying the required markings or replace the tires with a similar product, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on Feb. 13, 2017. Owners may contact Michelin at 1-888-847-8475.

Continental Tire Recalls Select LT Tires

Continental AG has voluntarily recalled approximately 325 light truck tires sold in the replacement market only. The tires are General Grabber 33×12.50R18 LT118Q produced in May 2015.

The company says the tires may experience localized tread wear, excessive vibration, noise and bulging in the tread area. With continued use, the tire could experience a tread separation, which could result in loss of vehicle control.

The tires can be identified with the Department of Transportation (DOT) codes A3CB 1YC 1815 and A3CB 1YC 1915. Only the production DOT weeks 1815 and 1915 are affected. Continental has not received any reports of accidents or injuries resulting from this condition.

Continental notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the details of the recall on January 20, 2017. The company is in communication with its tire distributors and dealers to identify consumers who purchased affected tires. Owners will be promptly notified and informed about the details of the voluntary safety recall program.
