Nokian Plans U.S. Tire Factory

M-Nokian-Dayton-TN-Rendering-1-1.jpgNokian Tyres Inc. is building a factory in the U.S. to produce passenger car, SUV and light truck tires. The plant, to be located in southeast Tennessee, will have an initial capacity to produce 4 million tires annually, and the site also will house a distribution center.

The company will break ground in Rhea County, Tennessee, in early 2018, and production lines should be running by 2020. The distribution facility will have the capacity to hold 600,000 tires, and there is room to expand production at the tire plant “to meet future demand.”
Nokian says it is investing $360 million to build what will be its first North American plant. It will serve customers in the U.S. and Canada.

“In addition to increased capacity, the Dayton, Tennessee, site’s proximity to North American customers will shorten lead and delivery times,” says Tommi Heinonen, head of Nokian Tyres North America. “It’s our goal that the new plant will help us better serve our growing customer base throughout the U.S. and Canada by improving customer service and efficiencies.”

Nokian says building a plant for North America continues the company’s “strong year-over-year growth in both Canada and the U.S.” The company recently increased its warehouse capacity with the opening of its Montreal-area distribution center.
The plant will create up to 400 new jobs in the local community. For more information about the plant, visit http://www.nokiantires.com/daytonfactory.

Nokian SnapSkan Help Consumers Monitor Their Tread Depth

M-NT-SnapSkan-2016-07-1.jpg

Nokian Tyres plc is unveiling a tire tread measuring tool in its homeland of Finland. SnapSkan measures tread depth using an on-the-ground 3-D scanner, and with license plate recognition software, the system can send a free personal tire report by text message or email.
Drivers also can access their tire report online at http://www.snapskan.fi/en.

The SnapSkan service will appear along drivers’ everyday routes, and the first will open Jan. 12, 2017, on the access road to the Q-Park Iso Erottaja underground car park in Helsinki, Finland. The plan is to expand the service throughout Finland, then to the Nokian-owned Vianor tire outlets. Ultimately the service will be introduced in other countries “in forthcoming years,” the company says.

SnapSkan requires no additional equipment be outfitted on a consumer’s vehicle, and it works with all brands of tires.

The technical service was developed in collaboration with Finnish technology partners Futurice and Affecto. The entire service is enabled by 3D scanning technology patented by British Sigmavision.

Nokian points to studies that indicate about 25% of tire-related accidents occur because the tire’s tread depth is below minimum standards. The company says SnapSkan raises motorists’ awareness of the condition of their tires.

“Too many people are unaware of the condition of their tires, and the threshold for replacing tires seems to be high,” says Ville Nikkola, the leader of Vianor’s retail business. “We want to use this new technology to raise drivers’ awareness of the condition of their tires by making it as easy to access as possible.”

Ari Lehtoranta, CEO and president of Nokian Tyres, says, “There is a big change ahead for our industry in the near future. Until now, the tire sector has lagged clearly behind other industries in terms of digitalization. It is high time to harness technology to serve motorists with regard to their tires. The sector needs a bold forerunner.
“It is our job to make our roads and environment safer. Our company’s roots stretch back to 1898, and we have been at the forefront since then, providing a range of products and services related to road-users’ safety. We launched the world’s first winter tire, and now we are launching the first service to report to motorists on tire safety directly by email or text message.”

The Automobile and Touring Club of Finland says the service will make drivers’ lives easier and will also improve safety.

Jukka Tolvanen, communications manager for the club, says, “This technology from Nokian Tyres also enables freedom of choice and cost-efficiency – it does not require equipment to be installed in cars at great expense.”

Nokian Rockproof Tire Has Professional Off-Roaders in Mind

M-Nokian-Rockproof-009-1.jpg

The Rockproof tire line by Nokian Tyres plc is targeting professional off-road drivers who need extreme durability from the tires on their light trucks and SUVs.
The Rockproof line was developed in conjunction with Nokian Heavy Tyres Ltd., and is designed to perform in quarries, forests, and mining areas. The cut-resistant Rockproof hybrid tread compound and aggressive tread pattern provide resistance in rough off-road conditions, durability, and the comfort of a passenger car tire.
It’s been tested by professionals at mines and quarries.

For the past few months, Logging operator Tom Brain of Dyer Logging put the Nokian Rockproof tires through real-world testing in the Canadian Rockies of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Brain’s Ford F-350 4×4 was outfitted with the Rockproof tires and put to work in forestry logging sites and roads consisting mostly of shot rock.

“Nokian Rockproof tires have outlasted all the other brands we’ve had on our truck,” says Brain. “We’ve put on roughly 31,000 miles and more than half of that is on gravel. What we found is that these tires have stood up better than anything we’ve had on the last two trucks, by far.”

The optimized tread block support provides more precise handling and stability, Nokian says. Two different side angles and the staggered support on the block sides ensure the tire’s tread blocks remain firm and that the groove bottoms will not be damaged even during rougher driving. The reinforced upper part of the sidewall provides additional protection against puncture and cut damage caused by sharp rocks, the company says.

The stone ejectors at the groove bottoms of the tire prevent sharp and jagged stones from attaching to the tread surface and penetrating the tire structure. Nokian says the stone ejectors improve the tire’s service life and offer additional protection by preventing tire body damage, especially on uneven terrain.

The Aramid Sidewall technology developed by Nokian offers durability and protection for demanding driving conditions. The company says the Rockproof tire’s sidewall structure contains extremely strong aramid fiber. The fiber reinforces the sidewall, making it more resistant to impacts and cuts that could otherwise damage it.

“Off-road driving and the toughest professional use require extreme durability from tires, and puncture protection in particular,” says Olli Seppälä, product development manager for Nokian. “Under these conditions, tires may sometimes have unpleasantly short service lives. Accidental damage causes a lot of additional costs and tire changes result in additional work. The tire has excellent cut resistance due to the tread compound that was developed for use in mines. The tire’s strong structure and aramid sidewalls protect the tire against damage from the sides. This product has been developed for improving the efficiency of demanding professional use.”

Sizing and specifications

The speed rating of this new tire is Q (up to 99 mph), and in North America it will be available in 13 sizes. In Europe the offerings will span eight sizes. The Nokian Rockproof will be available to consumers in early 2017.

Consumer Reports Positive for All-Weather Tires

Celsius_Left_inside

Consumer Reports has ranked the new Toyo Celsius, a variable-conditions tire ideal for snow but worn year-round, and the Nokian WR G3, a similar all-season/winter tire hybrid, above some winter tires.

During Consumer Reports testing, both tires performed similarly and were found to offer good winter traction, good stopping grip on dry roads and confident handling, placing them in the upper half of Consumer Reports’ winter/snow tire ratings chart. Toyo and Nokian’s winter tires, however, outperformed both all-weather tires.

Both tires received an overall score of 64, the same score as some winter tires such as Continental’s Winter Contact SI and the Cooper’s Weather Master WSC, but were placed below Consumer Reports’ top rated winter tires, Michelin’s XIce XI3, Nokian’s Hakkapeliitta and Bridgestone’s Blizzak WS80.

Nokian Unveils Premium All-Season Touring Tire

M-Nokian-eNTYRE2-0-1

Nokian Tyres Inc. has introduced the eNtyre 2.0, a premium all-season touring tire for the North American market.

The company says the tire is designed to give drivers the ultimate in driving safety, comfort and performance in an environmentally friendly tire.

The eNtyre 2.0, the successor to the eNtyre, uses an inside/outside tread pattern, new groove designs, a modern silica compound, and noise dampening technologies to greatly improve dry road handling, aquaplaning properties, and wet grip without compromising winter grip, all while decreasing noise levels and increasing tread life.

The premium touring tire also has impressive low rolling resistance to save fuel and reduce carbon emissions, according to the company. In addition, the production process uses earth-friendly materials to help reduce the environmental impact of the tire.

The Nokian eNtyre 2.0 comes in 46 sizes, 11 completely new for 2015, from 15 inches to 19 inches and in speed ratings T (118-123 mph/190-199 kph), H (130-148 mph/210-239 kph), and V (149-167 mph/240-269 kph). The majority of sizes will be available for spring 2015.

Nokian says the tire features several innovations. They are:

1. High modulus tread compound delivers improved handling properties like that of an ultra-high performance tire without compromising durability or wet or snow grip.

2. Comfort base compound provides unbeatable comfort over bumps and road cracks while reducing the tire’s heat build-up and improving wear characteristics.

3. Polished lateral and inside grooves helps evacuate a greater volume of water and slush more effectively to reduce aquaplaning and slushplaning.

4. Silent sidewall technology absorbs noise waves and vibrations by using a unique compound on the wing area of the tire for a quieter noise level inside the car.

5. Silent groove design reduces the unpleasant whistling noise by swirling the air passing through the main grooves of the tire using small indentations on the walls of the grooves. This creates a more pleasant noise level inside the car. This also helps to cool the tire and reduce tire wear.

Nokian Concept Tire Provides Winter Studs on Demand

How can you have a studded winter tire without studs? Nokian Tyres P.L.C. says it has found a way. The company has developed a concept tire that allows drivers to extend and retract studs with the press of a button.
nokia concept tire
Nokian says the concept tire and its unique stud technology gives a hint of the future. With a press of a button, the driver can bring out the studs to improve the grip of the tire. When the studs are not needed, they can be retracted back into the tire.

The driver makes the switch when the conditions clearly change. Studs are not used on dry roads and stable winter conditions but can be activated in icy weather for extreme safety.

The concept tire uses the tread pattern and structural solutions of the newly introduced Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 SUV studded winter tire. The studs on all four tires raise and lower at the same time. The body of the stud remains in place, and the moving part is the hard metal pin in the middle of the stud.

What a great idea, studded tires only when you need them. This is still a concept tire but one day may be on tire dealer shelves.
