Ironman Tires Expands Sizes for MT Tire

M-Hercules-ironman-allcountrymt-1.jpg

Hercules Tire & Rubber Co. has added four sizes to its lineup of Ironman All Country M/T tires.
Hercules says the Ironman All Country M/T delivers off-road traction in the most adverse conditions, durability in extended off-road use, and a studdable tread for extra bite.
The four new sizes are all load range E flotation offerings, up to 37-inches overall and with up to 22-inch wheel diameters.
“The All Country M/T has been well-received by both daily drivers and enthusiasts,” says Jedd Emans, vice president of marketing for Hercules. “It’s an incredibly durable and highly versatile tire at an entry-level position, which means this tire has a lot going for it,” .

Here’s a look at the newest Ironman All Country M/T sizes:

37X12.50R20/10 126Q

37X13.50R20/10 127Q

35X12.50R22/10 117Q

37X13.50R22/10 123Q

Hercules highlights these notable features:

groove design enhances durability by protecting against stone drilling and puncture;
shoulder blocks shovel away mud and silt and enhance traction on off-road surfaces;
the staggered buttress design increases off-road capability and guards against high sidewall cuts and abrasions; and
the void ratio effectively promotes self-cleaning capability in muddy conditions.
The tire is available in both the U.S. and Canada.

Yokohama Introduces the New Geolandar MT G003

M-Yokohama-Geolandar-MT-2.jpgYokohama Tire Corp. has been producing off-road tires since 1982, when the Super Digger was launched. Thirty-five years later, the company still offers the Y829 Super Digger III bias off-road racing tire in size 33×10.50-15!

The Geolandar M/T directional tire was introduced in 1998. Yokohama tweaked the design and compounding in 2004; the resulting M/T+ G001 became a new SKU number, but was hardly a new tire.

More than two decades have passed since the creation of the original Geolandar M/T, which makes the new Geolandar M/T G003 highly anticipated by Yokohama dealers in the U.S.

The M/T G003 features a non-directional tread pattern and is equal to or superior in every way to the tire it replaces, the G001, says Bob Abram, senior manager of product planning.

“The directional tread design of the old G001 wasn’t playing with customers or dealers. Getting the looks right of this tire was important because we knew what happens when you don’t get the looks right, even if the performance is pretty good.”

Features and benefits

Yokohama says the Geolandar M/T G003 is superior to the G001 not only in mud traction but also in dry braking and snow braking. It also weighs less, which results in greater fuel efficiency.

The tire’s dry, mud and wet traction were engineered using a triple-polymer tread compound combined with optimized sipes and “an ideal” block-to-void ratio. The tread also features an advanced variable pitch pattern that Abram says will be a big selling point for Yokohama dealers.

“One of the things that came out of our research with consumers and dealers alike is they want a quiet tire — for a mud tire. They don’t expect it to be touring tire quiet, but they would like to use it as an extra selling feature.

“We’ve got a new multi-pitch variation that helps keep the noise down. That helps even out those peak harmonics, which are what make a lot of the noise when the tire is rolling at highway speeds.”

Yokohama’s new Geo-Shield construction incorporates multiple sidewall plies, steel belts, a full nylon cap and a high turn-up carcass into the design. All Load Range E and D sizes feature three-ply technology.

“The three-ply is important as a marketing tool,” he says. “It gives consumers confidence that we have extra strength in the sidewall to protect against punctures and to hold up to heavy use. Also, that full nylon cap helps you avoid tread punctures, so there is an extra layer of protection there.”

Abram says sidewall durability is not a major concern for the urban cowboy, but “is a huge issue for people who are really beating up and using their vehicles off-road.”

The G003’s Sidewall Armor not only protects the sidewall against impacts, but also adds traction elements to the design. And it gives the tire a unique, aggressive look.

“We were trying to avoid coming out with an M/T tire that was so ‘me, too,’ that looked just like the Toyo Open Country M/T or the Hankook Dynapro MT RT03 or BFGoodrich T/A KM2, for example. We didn’t want that to happen, but we also wanted to say to the extreme off-roader, ‘We have something extra for you.’”

By the end of the year, the Geolandar M/T G003 will be available in 37 Q-rated sizes, with rim diameters ranging from 15 to 20 inches. They will be introduced in three waves, broken out by the following load ranges:

July 1: 18 LRE, 1 LRC, 1 LRD (including LT255/75R17 LRC, LT275/65R20 LRE and LT305/55R20 LRE).

September 1: 8 LRE, 4 LRC.

November 1: 3 LRC, 2 LRE.

Yokohama backs the tire with a 30-day money-back trial pledge.

According to Abram, the mud-terrain segment in the U.S. accounted for more than 3.6 million tires in 2016, compared to more than 2.8 million in 2012.

The top five selling light trucks in 2016 were the Ford F Series, Chevy Silverado, Dodge Ram, GMC Sierra and the Jeep Wrangler. Those vehicles “are right in our wheelhouse of what we want as potential fitments for this Geolandar mud tire,” he says. So are some specialized vehicles designed for more rugged duty like the F-150 Raptor, Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, and the Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro.

Yokohama Introduces Geolandar MT G003

M-Yokohama-Geolandar-MT-G003-1-17-2.jpg

Yokohama Tire Corp.’s new mud-terrain tire, the Geolandar M/T G003, will be available in July. It is only the company’s first M/T tire since the Geolandar M/T was introduced in 1998, and will replace the Geolandar M/T+.

Yokohama says the tire is designed “for hardcore off-roaders, outdoor enthusiasts and pick-up truck/SUV owners.” It initially will be available in 37 15- to 20-inch Q-rated sizes, broken out as follows:
July 1: 20 sizes (18 LRE, 1 LRC, 1 LRD), including LT255/75R17 LRC, LT275/65R20 LRE and LT305/55R20 LRE.

September 1: 12 sizes (8 LRE, 4 LRC).

Fourth quarter: five sizes (3 LRE, 2 LRE).

“The M/T has it all: intimidating good looks… strength, proven performance and excellent traction in all on- and off-road terrains, from everyday highway driving to attacking steep, jagged rocks, muddy trails and desert sand,” says Andrew Briggs, Yokohama Tire senior director of tire business and product planning.

Yokohama says the Geolandar M/T G003 features the following:

* Yokohama’s new Geo-Shield construction, which incorporates multiple sidewall plies, steel belts, a full nylon cap and a high turn-up carcass into the design.

* A long lasting tread, the result of a new, high-density compound and a wide, flat profile “that creates exceptional wear performance.”

* “Outstanding” dry, wet and mud traction, the result of a triple-polymer tread compound combined with optimized sipes and an ideal block to void ratio.

* A quieter (for an M/T tire) ride on the road, due to the advanced variable pitch tread on the M/T that assures a quiet, on-highway ride while maintaining off-road performance.

* An aggressive Sidewall Armor design that not only delivers off-road traction and protection from damage, but also “creates a bold, new look.”

Yokohama backs the tire with a 30-day money-back trial pledge.

Geolandar M/T G003 applications include a wide variety of popular pick-ups and SUVs, including the Dodge Ram 1500, Jeep Wrangler, Chevy Silverado 2500, Ford F-150 Raptor, Nissan Titan, Toyota FJ Cruiser, Land Rover Discovery and GMC Yukon XL 3500.

Along with the introduction, Yokohama has launched two new sponsorships to fit with the audience for the M/T and the entire Geolandar line.

1. Reinforcing the toughness and strength of the M/T, Yokohama has become the Official Tire of the U.S Spartan Race series, the original and largest obstacle race series.

2. Yokohama is also the Official Tire of the Nitro Circus Live US Tour and Nitro World Games. Nitro Circus is the premier adrenaline-fueled action sports tour.

“Kenda is hungry and aggressively targeting the off-road market and we are honored to be working side-by-side with them on this campaign,” says Vore President Mike Self. “We’ve always been impressed with Kenda’s esteemed tire pedigree, and believe Kenda tires will provide Vore with the same high level of quality that our unique experiences deman.d”

Under the agreement, Kenda tires will run exclusively on Vore 2016 Roush Mustangs, Ford F-150 Raptors and Vore challenge racing trucks. The Roush RS1 and RS3 Mustangs are utilized for drifting experiences, the first generation V8-Powered Ford Raptors are operated in their dedicated Raptor programs, and the custom-built V6 and V8 Vore Challenge Trucks are designed for use on their stadium short course experiences, desert tours, and complete racing packages.

Vore has worked with industry experts to development a pro level “stadium-like” short course off-road track that allows visitors to have the best off-road driving experience available. Vore’s short course track features five major jumps (including a 40-foot table top jump that launches vehicles over 20 feet into the air, high-banked and high-speed corners, a thrilling rhythm section, and perfect drifting corners. Vore also offers desert adventure tours in the Raptors as well as the Vore racing trucks. New to VORE is the Roush Mustang Drift Program where drivers learn how to drift like a pro in the Vore/Roush Mustangs.

The Kenda Klever M/T KR29 will be featured on the vehicles in the off road packages while the Kenda Kaiser KR20 UHP summer tire will be showcased with the Roush Mustang Drifting Programs.

The company says Kenda tires are engineered to provide solid performance at a great price and exceed all standards while meeting the range of challenges customers face on and off the road.

“There are two things that really get me excited about Vore,” adds Kellie Rhodebeck, marketing manager, Kenda Tires. “First, there’s the instant “cool factor” we get by associating with an experience like Vore, and I’m looking forward to creating unique content opportunities with this in mind. In addition, customers don’t normally have the opportunity to test drive tires before buying the products, but with Vore we will have the ultimate test ground for our products. At the end of the experience, consumers will be able to confidently say that they trust the Kenda brand to provide the quality and performance they need.”

This year, Kenda will launch the latest evolution of its Vezda passenger tire line with the introduction of the Vezda UHP A/S KR400, developed by the engineering team based at the new Kenda research and development facility in Green, Ohio. Kenda says it will use the relationship with Vore to give select customers the chance to see how responsive the KR400 is on the Roush Mustangs.

Two Kumho Tires Win Red Dot Award

M-KumhoRedDotAward-1.jpg

The company says it is the first Korean tire maker to be honored with the award for five consecutive years.

Introduced in June 2015 and sold in Korea, Kumho’s K-Silent Tire is equipped with a technology that reduces noise coming from air vibration in the tire, known as resonance noise, caused by the friction between the tire and the ground. The company says it is the first to develop the noise reduction technology, which is dubbed the K-silent system, and obtained a Korean patent for the design and materials of noise-absorbing components with more patent applications in the pipeline for the proprietary technology in other countries.

The Road Venture MT51 is available in the North American market. The mud terrain tire is capable of handling the harshest conditions while being just as comfortable on the road as off, according to Kumho. The MT51’s aggressive sidewall design prevents damage and enhances grip when in deep mud or rock climbing. Its full-depth, circumferential, zigzag grooves increase traction and help eject stones and mud while balancing on-road driving performance.

“The Red Dot Award is one of the world’s largest venues for exchanges among those interested in industrial design. The receipt of the award for five consecutive years is yet another recognition of the competitiveness of our designs,” says Jeong Taek-Gyun, senior managing director at Kumho Tire R&D headquarters. “We will continue to build our capabilities in all areas of tire technology including design in order to enhance our brand image.”

Held by Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Germany since 1955, the Red Dot Design Award honors winners in the categories of product, communication and concept. It is recognized as one of the world’s top three design awards along with the International Forum Design (iF) of Germany and International Design Excellence Award (IDEA) of the Unites States.

Cooper Adding Premium Light Truck Tire to Discoverer Line

M-Cooper-Discoverer-STT-PRO-1

Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. is adding a premium light truck tire to its Discoverer line. The Discoverer STT PRO is replacing the Discoverer STT. The new tire features three-ply construction and a distinctive tread design.

Created to deliver superior grip, traction, handling and performance in all off-road conditions, Cooper says the Discoverer STT PRO doesn’t give up on-road capabilities either. With silica in its tread compound, the tread is long-lasting and offers enhanced wet traction in all wet-weather conditions. Cut-and-chip additives help reduce damage to the tread by rocks and other debris.

Angles on the tread’s groove sweep stones out of the way before they cause damage. The non-directional tread pattern also cleans itself of mud, and sipes of varying depths are built in for better traction on wet surfaces and slick rocks.

Cleats on the shoulder bite to provide maximum grip in mud as well as on inclines, and Cooper’s Armor-Tek3 construction gives the sidewall and tread extra strength to improve the tire’s durability. A rubber rim flange protector helps protect the wheel and tire from hazards in off-road driving conditions.

The Discoverer STT PRO is launching with 41 sizes, Q and R speed ratings and C, D and E load ranges.
