Goodyear is Using Renewable Soybean Oil in Tires

M-Goodyear-blimp-BBMOffice-2-15

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. has introduced a tread compound using soybean oil. The company says it is the first commercial use of a soybean oil-based rubber compound.

The new tire technology was developed with support from the United Soybean Board (USB).

A Goodyear team of scientists and engineers created a tread compound, or formulation, using soybean oil, which is naturally derived, cost-effective, carbon-neutral and renewable.

“Goodyear’s legacy of innovation drives us to continue to apply new technology solutions, developing superior performing tires that meet consumer demands,” says Eric Mizner, Goodyear’s director of global materials science.

By employing soybean oil in tires, Goodyear says it found a new way to help keep the rubber compound pliable in changing temperatures, a key performance achievement in maintaining and enhancing the vehicle’s grip on the road surface.

Goodyear’s tests have shown rubber made with soybean oil mixes more easily in the silica-reinforced compounds used in manufacturing certain tires. This also improves manufacturing efficiency and reduces energy consumption.

Goodyear cooperated on the project with the USB, a group of farmer-directors. The USB provided some funding support for the development of Goodyear’s soybean oil application in tires.

The commercialization of soybean oil in tires as the latest technology breakthrough by Goodyear builds on the company’s other recent innovations, such as the use of silica derived from rice husk ash, another component Goodyear is using in certain consumer tires, along with current and past uses of components such as carbon fiber, DuPont Kevlar, volcanic sand

Goodyear and USW Reach a 5 Year Labor Deal

M-goodyear-danville-17-1.jpgGoodyear Tire & Rubber Co. will not have any production problems with the United Steelworkers (USW) for five years if a new tentative agreement is ratified by USW workers.

The tentative agreement on a five-year master labor contract covers nearly 7,000 workers at five plants in the United States. In the recent past, three-year contracts have been standard in the tire industry.

“We believe we have crafted a new labor agreement that positions both Goodyear and the United Steelworkers for success in the future,” says Jim Allen, Goodyear’s vice president of global labor relations. No other details were disclosed.

The tentative agreement is subject to a ratification vote by USW members at the five plants covered by the contract: Akron, Ohio; Danville, Va.; Fayetteville, N.C.; Gadsden, Ala.; and Topeka, Kan. The local unions are expected to schedule ratification votes within the next few weeks.

The USW’s Goodyear Policy Committee met in Gadsden, Ala., in early March to discuss items of importance for the negotiations, which concluded this summer.

Rising Cost of Raw Materials to Blame for Surge in Tire Prices

cheesy-growth-iconTire makers worldwide are citing rising raw material costs as the driver of their price increases. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. painted a picture of just how extreme the increases have been so far — using words like “volatile” and “unpredictable.”

Richard Kramer, chairman and CEO, pointed to “significant volatility in our key commodity costs, including natural rubber prices” during a call with investors Feb. 8.

“Since our last earnings call there’s been a swing of a low of 67 cents-per-pound to a peak of $1.04 per pound as recently as last week, an increase of an astounding 55%,” said Kramer.

“The raw material cost story is about more than just natural rubber, with challenges coming in a broad cross section of commodities. Prices of key commodities such as butadiene and carbon black have risen to 52-week highs in recent weeks.

“We expect raw material costs to remain at heightened levels in 2017.”

Goodyear was the first tire company to announce a price increase in 2017. The tire maker initiated an increase of up to 8% on its consumer and commercial brands effective Feb. 1.

Laura Thompson, executive vice president and chief financial officer, said, “Even since the Detroit Auto Show, we’ve gone up over $300 million in raw material cost increases just in the last three weeks. So it’s quite volatile.”
Another complexity is that there’s a lag of when raw material prices hit a tire maker’s profit and loss statement. Kramer said there can easily be a six-month lag from when the raw rubber is purchased in Southeast Asia to when a tire is produced and sold. It spends time on a ship and on a dock before it ever enters Goodyear’s inventory, and then production time is another extension. Tires in Europe and North America experience the longest delays, while a price hike hits Asia much faster.

Kramer said Goodyear anticipates a $1 billion increase in raw material prices in 2017. That compares to $800 million in 2006, $700 million in 2008 and $2 billion in 2011.

Asked if the company might need to implement another price increase down the line, Kramer didn’t speculate. “We can only speak to the situation that we see at hand. We have a demonstrated track record to deal with what’s thrown in front of us.

“Clearly the raw material inputs that we’ve got have been very volatile and I would even say unpredictable.”

Goodyear Debuts a New Trailer Tire Size

silent-armor-tire-recall

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. says its new Endurance trailer tire is the product boaters, water skiers and workers who haul equipment from one job to the next have requested.
“Goodyear is proud and excited to introduce the Endurance, the only radial special trailer tire built in the United States,” says Ryan Patterson, president of Goodyear’s North American consumer tire business.

The tire is capable of transporting heavy cargo, and its Durawall technology helps resist sidewall cuts and punctures.

It’s available in load ranges D and E to accommodate larger trailer load capacities, and the entire Endurance trailer line carries the N speed rating, which allows consumers to travel at highway speeds. Other features include:

an optimized tread depth and decoupling groove, which help it remain cool while towing heavy loads;
rugged fabric-steel construction, which offers durability and improved carrying capacity while remaining compatible with tire pressure monitoring systems and typical tire inflation stations;
a specialized inner liner, which minimizes air loss in trailer applications; and
a scuff guard, which helps protect sidewalls.
The Endurance also comes in a new, special trailer tire size: ST 255/85R16. Goodyear says it’s the only tire on the market in that size.
“The launch of the Goodyear Endurance is an exciting development for consumers who want a durable, domestically manufactured tire that they can trust to carry their important cargo,” says Patterson. “Goodyear is proud to meet this need with the new Endurance.”

Expect to See Increase in Tire Prices Next Month

cheesy-growth-iconNow there are five. Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations LLC is the latest tire company to announce price increases in 2017.

Effective March 1, Bridgestone says it will adjust prices up to 8% across a range of passenger, light truck, off-the-road and agricultural tire products and tubes in North America.

The reason for the increases? Rising raw material costs “and other market dynamics.”

The new pricing will vary by business unit and by product line.

“Our sales and account teams will soon provide further details to our customers,” adds Bridgestone.

Other companies have made similar announcements:

“Nexen to Its Dealers: Expect Tire Price Increases on March 1.”

“Carlstar To Raise Prices on All Brands By March 1”

“Cooper Anticipates Raising Tire Prices Close to Feb. 1.”

“Goodyear Will Increase Tire Prices Effective Feb. 1.”

Most Popular Tire Brand Trends

M-mtd-facts-issue-mtd100-17-1.jpg

Every year, Modern Tire Dealer breaks down “the year that was” in its January Facts Issue. It is the first publication with an in-depth report on the previous year’s performance.

In order for readers to understand what the numbers mean, we also 1) show trends and 2) analyze what we have found. Is our Facts Issue heavy with numbers? Sure. Are they stand-alone numbers? Heavens no!

In our latest edition, we look at the number of retail dealers and outlets represented by the brands listed in our yearly Modern Tire Dealer 100 list. More Top 100 dealers sell Michelin than any other brand. What other consumer tire brands are commonplace among the largest tire dealers in the U.S.? And does comparing past with present numbers reveal any trends?

The answer to the last question is “yes.” On page 27 of our Facts Issue, we rank the most commonly listed brands by the number of dealers who sell them from 2006 through 2016. To give you a quick, visual snapshot of what those numbers reveal, here is a Web-only line graph that breaks down the brand-to-dealer ratio over time.

Not surprisingly, many of the dealers selling one of the three Tier 1 brands also sell another brand from the same tire manufacturer.

Goodyear’s Concept Tire Recognized as one of the Years Best Inventions

M-Goodyear-blimp-BBMOffice-2-15Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.’s Eagle-360 concept tire has been named one of Time magazine’s “Best Inventions of the Year 2016.”

“By steadily reducing the driver interaction and intervention in self-driving vehicles, tires will play an even more important role as the primary link to the road,” says Goodyear’s Chief Technical Officer Joe Zekoski. “Goodyear’s concept tires play a dual role in that future both as creative platforms to push the boundaries of conventional thinking and testbeds for next-generation technologies.”

Each year, Time magazine’s technology editors list the year’s “best inventions that are making the world better, smarter and—in some cases—a little more fun.” This year’s list includes 25 inventions. In addition to Goodyear’s Eagle-360 concept, the list includes a virtual reality headset, shoes that lace themselves, a solar roof collaboration between Tesla and SolarCity, and the Chevy Bolt electric vehicle.

The Goodyear Eagle-360 is a spherical-shaped design concept tire that would provide self-driving cars ultimate maneuverability, connectivity and biomimicry to increase safety. “Although the Eagle-360 is a future concept, it represents an essential aspect of Goodyear’s innovation strategy and our vision for smart and safe mobility,” says Zekoski.

Goodyear’s Latest Concept Tire

m-450462-1

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. committed to the same inside-out philosophy as Lexus when it created concept tires for the Lexus UX concept car: blend internal elements with exterior ones.

The inside-out philosophy is obvious at first glance. The spokes of the rim flow into the sidewall design of the tire, creating one unique feature consistent with the rest of the car.

The sections of the sidewall are integrated into the wheel, giving the tire its urban crossover look, while the tread pattern gives the tire a dynamic appearance. The tire’s design is created using Goodyear’s hi-tech laser carving technique.

The tire incorporates state-of-the-art features including Goodyear’s Sound Comfort Technology, which uses an open-cell polyurethane foam element attached to the inner surface of the tire. This technology dampens the tire cavity resonance sound peak that is generated when the tire rolls over a surface, enabling the vehicle’s cabin to be extremely quiet.
With this concept, Goodyear has combined its Sound Comfort Technology with the chip-in-tire technology, showcased for the first time at Geneva in 2014. The chip sends vital information to the car’s on-board computer, enhancing the stability and performance of the car when cornering and braking. This system transmits information on tire pressure, temperature, and the tire identification details to the vehicle’s computer, which is then able to automatically refine the car’s longitudinal and lateral control algorithms, delivering driving performance.
Furthermore, the new concept tire is equipped with Goodyear’s RunOnFlat Technology, which incorporates reinforced sidewalls that can properly carry the weight of a car for up to 80 km (about 50 miles) after a puncture with complete loss of air pressure.

David Anckaert, general director of OE product development in Europe, the Middle East and Africaat Goodyear, says, “We are proud to present this innovative concept tire for the Lexus UX concept, which confirms once again Goodyear’s experience in providing OEMs with tailor-made solutions.

“Our designers succeeded in developing a tire that is consistent with the car’s design philosophy, and at the same time we managed to answer the Lexus drivers’ needs for comfort, driving pleasure and safety by building on technologies currently available to consumers in our product portfolio such as Sound Comfort Technology and the RunOnFlat Technology.”

Goodyear Recalls 1,650 Light Truck Tires

M-Goodyear-blimp-BBMOffice-2-15

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. is recalling certain G399A LHS Fuel Max truck tires, size 295/75R22.5 LRG, manufactured Jan. 24, 2016, to May 28, 2016. The potential number of units affected is 1,650.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Campaign ID Number for the recall is 16T010.

NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation says that due to an anomaly during the curing press set-up operation, incomplete adhesion between the tread and the top belt may have occurred. “Incomplete adhesion may result in tread separation of the tire while in use, increasing the risk of a crash.”

Goodyear will notify the vehicle manufacturers that purchased the tires, as well as those who purchased the steer tires as replacement equipment. The vehicle manufacturers will notify their owners.

Dealers will replace the affected tires with similar tires free of charge.

The recall is expected to begin Oct. 15, 2016. Owners may contact Goodyear customer service at (800) 592-3267.
