Bridgestone Earns Supplier Award from GM and Caterpillar

imagesTwo Bridgestone Americas Inc. tire plants have been honored for supplier excellence from General Motors Co. (GM) and Caterpillar Inc.

Bridgestone’s passenger tire plant in Wilson, N.C., received a GM Supplier Quality Excellence Award for 2016. This is the plant’s fifth year to receive the GM award.

“At Bridgestone, we are committed to working with GM to provide the highest quality products and solutions that reflect our combined focus on performance, sustainability and innovation. We are honored to be recognized by GM for the delivery of high quality products that meet the dynamic needs of the driving public,” says Michael Darr, Wilson plant manager.

Bridgestone says the Wilson plant has been a leader in tire manufacturing innovation during its 43-year history. It was one of the first Bridgestone plants to produce DriveGuard run-flat tires, the first full line of premium, all-season replacement tires engineered to go up to 50 miles after a puncture.

The Wilson plant is currently undergoing a major expansion, with Bridgestone planning to invest up to $344 million in the facility over the next 10 years.

The company says this multi-phase expansion will allow Wilson to meet global demand for high value added tires, as well as improve quality and productivity while reducing costs. The project will add manufacturing space to accommodate new tire assembly machines, materials handling systems, curing presses and associated equipment.

This new space will enable the Wilson plant to potentially increase plant capacity by up to 3,000 tires per day, which, if fully realized, could bring daily production at the Wilson plant to 35,000 tires by 2018.

Bridgestone’s agriculture tire manufacturing plant in Des Moines, Iowa, achieved the highest level in the Caterpillar Supplier Quality Excellence Process (SQEP) Certification: Platinum Level.

Bridgestone says this represents a significant milestone for the company and the Firestone Ag team, as the Des Moines Plant received Gold Level in the Caterpillar SQEP Certification for the past three years. “To achieve Platinum Level in the Caterpillar Supplier Quality Excellence Process certification program says a great deal about Bridgestone’s commitment to consistently achieve high standards of quality, productivity and efficiency in support of our customers,” says Greg Halford, Des Moines plant manager.

Bridgestone says the SQEP Certification demonstrates the strong values and ethical principles of Bridgestone in conducting business, as well as the company’s commitment to collaborate with Caterpillar to implement a culture aiming for “zero-defects” across the supply chain. Recognition levels of Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum, reflected in order of increasing difficulty, distinguish outstanding supplier quality performance.

Caterpillar’s SQEP Certification was created to recognize a supplier’s dedication to providing superior quality, and only is awarded to suppliers who demonstrate world-class performance on an ongoing basis. Each year, suppliers are evaluated with increasingly strict criteria for distinguishing outstanding supplier quality, exceptional service and delivery performance.

The Des Moines, Iowa, plant opened in 1945 and produces agricultural, construction, forestry and off-road tires. The plant has received numerous awards, including the 2016 Gold Leadership Award (Baldrige) Award from Iowa Recognition for Performance Excellence.

Bridgestone Americas Inc. is adding an all-position, wide-base radial truck tire to its Firestone lineup. The Firestone FS818 is designed for on-and-off-highway applications and severe service environments.

M-Firestone-FS818-wide-base-radial-truck-tire-1.jpg
The tire’s wide-base design is designed for higher payloads and improved flotation. It features special tread compounds to help resist cuts, chips, tearing and irregular wear.
The Firestone FS818 is designed with a deep, self-cleaning tread pattern for aggressive traction and long original mileage. Stone rejector platforms in every groove offer durability.

“We recognized a need for a durable, hardworking tire that is versatile enough to perform in on-and-off-highway environments,” says Sanjay Nayakwadi, director of product strategy for Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations LLC. “The Firestone FS818 tire does just that, enabling fleets to haul higher payloads and tackle challenging service environments.”

Key features of the Firestone FS818 tire include:

block sipes to slice through water and provide solid grip on wet roads;
four steel belts to extend casing life while providing protection from cuts and punctures;
sidewall protector ribs to fight against cuts, snags and abrasions; and
block design and edges to perform in on/off highway environments.
The Firestone FS818 tire is available in these sizes:

Bridgestone Increases Truck and OTR Prices a 3rd Time in 2017

images

Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations LLC is increasing the prices of its commercial tires in North America.

The company says it will raise prices “up to 8%” on its commercial truck and bus tires and off-the-road tires. The increase will take effect on or before July 1, depending on business unit and product line.

This is the second price increase on Bridgestone products in 2017, resulting in a 16% increase. The company announced its initial round of price hikes in late January, and a few days later extended it to cover the entire Bridgestone portfolio.

Bridgestone follows Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., which announced a second price increase on April 5.

Firestone M/T 2 Tire Designed for Maximum Traction

M-Firestone-0076-LR-1.jpgThe new Firestone Destination M/T2 tire from Bridgestone Americas Inc. is designed to provide maximum traction for 4×4 vehicles, pickup trucks and SUVs in off-road conditions.

The new tire replaces the Firestone Destination M/T, which came out in 2002. Bridgestone says the new M/T2 tire “does everything better” than its predecessor. Advances in tire technology, especially compounding, are responsible for improvements in off-road, snow and wet performance.

A new tread compound, three-ply sidewall construction and more aggressive upper sidewall design give the Destination M/T2 increased traction in mud and offer stronger resistance to chips and tears. Stone and mud rejectors help keep the tread clear of debris.

The Firestone Destination M/T2 tire has 20% more biting edges than the previous generation tire for better grip on slick, wet surfaces and in snow conditions. The company also added sipes for better snow traction capability compared to the prior tire. The Firestone Destination M/T2 tire is studdable.

Product manager Justin Hayes told Modern Tire Dealer that there are two types of buyers of the new Firestone Destination M/T2 tire. “There’s one who really cares about the performance, he’s going to take his truck or Jeep off road and he wants the traction capability,” he says.

“For that type of customer we’ve significantly improved the off-road performance capabilities versus the current generation Destination M/T on dry rocks, wet rocks, creeks, mud and sand. In all of these types of off-road conditions, the traction capabilities of the Destination M/T2 have been improved versus the predecessor product.”

Hayes says the other type of driver who would purchase an M/T tire primarily cares about the looks of the product. “For this type of driver the Destination M/T2 has a much more aggressive look and feel than the previous generation product. The tread area has been totally redesigned, the off shoulder area has more rubber and a more aggressive protruding image for the driver who wants the tire to look aggressive.”

The Firestone Destination M/T2 tire is available in 29 sizes for 15- to 22-inch wheels. The tires will be delivered to stores in July 2017.

“The Firestone Destination M/T2 tire is the ultimate tire for adventure-seekers looking to get the most performance out of their truck or Jeep,” says Erik Seidel, president, consumer replacement tire sales, U.S. and Canada, Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations.

“Overlanders and weekend warriors expect their tires to perform across a wide range of intense conditions, and the Destination M/T2 delivers an incredible off-road driving experience. We built a tough tire that attacks the terrain.”

Hankook and Bridgestone Earn GM Supplier of the Year Honors

M-HankookGMSupplierOfYear-1-2.jpg

Hankook Tire America Corp. and Bridgestone Corp. received supplier of the year awards from General Motors Co. at the auto manufacturer’s 25th annual supplier awards ceremony.

This is the first time Hankook has received the award. This is the second straight year and 15th occasion that Bridgestone has received this award, which includes the Bridgestone Americas Inc. division.

GM recognized 118 of its best suppliers from 15 countries that have consistently exceeded its expectations, created outstanding value or brought new innovations to the company. It is the most suppliers GM has recognized since introducing the Supplier of the Year program in 1992.

“We are focused on building positive supplier relationships, bringing new, customer-centric innovations to GM and being the OEM of choice among suppliers,” said Steve Kiefer, GM vice president, global purchasing and supply chain. “The companies we recognize tonight not only have brought innovation, but also delivered it with the quality our customers deserve.”

The winning suppliers were chosen by a global team of GM purchasing, engineering, quality, manufacturing and logistics executives and selected based on performance criteria in product purchasing, indirect purchasing, customer care and aftersales, and logistics.

“Acknowledged by our partners, this award is an additional proof point which testifies to Hankook Tire’s technology leadership and premium quality,” said Seung Hwa Suh, vice chairman and CEO of Hankook. “We will continue to thrive as a global premium brand by providing innovative, top-quality tires to our partners worldwide.”

Said Mike Martini, president, original equipment, U.S. and Canada, for Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations: “I am proud of the effort and dedication that earned Bridgestone this honor for the 15th time. This award is a testament to our product, engineering and manufacturing performance at Bridgestone, and belongs to the dedicated teammates across our global organization who bring value and innovation to partners like GM.”

Most Popular Tire Brand Trends

M-mtd-facts-issue-mtd100-17-1.jpg

Every year, Modern Tire Dealer breaks down “the year that was” in its January Facts Issue. It is the first publication with an in-depth report on the previous year’s performance.

In order for readers to understand what the numbers mean, we also 1) show trends and 2) analyze what we have found. Is our Facts Issue heavy with numbers? Sure. Are they stand-alone numbers? Heavens no!

In our latest edition, we look at the number of retail dealers and outlets represented by the brands listed in our yearly Modern Tire Dealer 100 list. More Top 100 dealers sell Michelin than any other brand. What other consumer tire brands are commonplace among the largest tire dealers in the U.S.? And does comparing past with present numbers reveal any trends?

The answer to the last question is “yes.” On page 27 of our Facts Issue, we rank the most commonly listed brands by the number of dealers who sell them from 2006 through 2016. To give you a quick, visual snapshot of what those numbers reveal, here is a Web-only line graph that breaks down the brand-to-dealer ratio over time.

Not surprisingly, many of the dealers selling one of the three Tier 1 brands also sell another brand from the same tire manufacturer.

Bridgestone Results from Olympic Sponsorship

356805.jpegTeam Bridgestone ended up with one gold medal and two silver medals at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Bridgestone Americas Inc. partnered with five U.S. Olympic hopefuls for the games, which ended Aug. 21. One of the athletes, gymnast Aly Raisman, accounted for the three medals.

Here is a review of the five Olympic athletes sponsored by Bridgestone, plus their results.

1. Aly Raisman (gymnastics): gold medal in the women’s team all-around, silver in both the women’s floor exercise and individual all-around.

2. Meb Keflezighi (track & field, men’s marathon): 33rd place.

3. Kelley O’Hara (women’s soccer): lost to Sweden in the quarterfinals.

4. Cullen Jones (men’s swimming): didn’t qualify for the Olympics.

5. Khatuna Lorig (women’s archery): didn’t qualify for the Olympics.

Bridgestone is also sponsoring Will Groulx at the 2016 Paralympic Games, which will be held in Rio Sept. 7-18. Groulx will compete in men’s cycling.

Team Bridgestone also is partnering with four-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Johnson, who is serving as “coach” of an internal program to offer performance-based training and inspiration to Bridgestone’s retail employees. Johnson’s world-record 400m time of 43.18 seconds, set in 1999, was broken by South African Wayde van Niekerk, who won gold at the 2016 Olympics with a time of 43.03 seconds.

Each of the six athletes not only received financial support from Bridgestone, but also access to Bridgestone’s “cutting-edge products and technologies,” according to the company.

Bridgestone Updates Retread For Refuse Hauler Tire

M-Bridgestone-Bandag-BRM3-1.jpg

Bridgestone Americas Inc. has released a new Bandag BRM3 retread with a proprietary compound and advanced tread design that is engineered to deliver a balance of long wear, durability, and traction.

The Bandag BRM3 is designed for use as an all-position tire in the refuse industry.
“Bridgestone continues to invest in research to deliver retread solutions that optimize tire management programs at a fraction of the cost of new tires,” says Ben Rosenblum, director of marketing for Bandag in Bridgestone’s Commercial Group. “The Bandag BRM3 is the longest wearing tread for refuse applications that Bandag has ever produced, while still offering the traction and durability that refuse companies require to meet the day-to-day demands placed on their fleets. Bandag is the retreader of choice for America’s largest refuse fleets, and we continue to expand our product portfolio to better serve the needs of these analytical customers.”

Key features of the BRM3 retread include:

a proprietary, scrub-resistant compound, which contributes to long service life;

shoulders that help resist damage caused by frequent twisting and turning often found in refuse applications;

a high center void design to enhance traction; and

shoulder sipes that contribute to strong grip on wet roads.

The BRM3 retread from Bandag was developed exclusively for refuse fleets striving to lower their cost per mile or reduce cost per driver hours. Bridgestone says the BRM3 delivers “significant improvements over its predecessors,” including an improvement of more than 20% in wet braking traction when compared to the BRM2 tread pattern, and 20% longer wear life than the BRM tread pattern.

Premium truck tires from Bridgestone are designed to be retreaded multiple times, enabling fleets to operate more sustainably. Since 1957, the Bandag retread process has kept an estimated 300 million tires out of the waste stream and saved more than four billion gallons of oil, while also helping fleet customers lower their operating costs.

The BRM3 retread comes in a 26/32” tread depth and is available now through the Bandag nationwide network of dealers in the U.S. and Canada.

4 Innovative Tires on Display at Rifen

logoA truck tire from Groupe Michelin and Bridgestone Corp.’s line of run-flat tires were among the products to win innovation awards at Reifen Essen 2016.

The awards were presented during opening celebrations of the trade fair, which continues through May 27.

Michelin won for its Michelin X Line Energy Triple A tires. The line offers complete coverage of tires that have achieved Class A fuel efficiency according to the European regulations. The line includes a drive axle tire for trucks, a steering axle tire, and trailer tires with Class A fuel efficiency.

Bridgestone’s DriveGuard run-flat tires were recognized for their versatility, as they can be fitted to almost any passenger car equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system. The specialist jury also gave a special mention to the tire for its environmentally friendly credentials, as it is fully recyclable.

Service concept and process optimization award

4JET Technologies GmbH was recognized for its system designed to equip tires with an individual, permanent QR code which can be read by a smartphone camera. The company has also developed a process which enables individual QR codes to be marked onto the tire using lasers. This means that the scan and connect application enables tires to be continuously monitored throughout their life cycle.

Motor vehicle service award

Corghi SpA’s Uniformity is a tire fitting machine with diagnostic functions. The new machine will allow what is referred to as match mounting to take place on the tire fitting machine itself. Not only does Uniformity carry out normal tire fitting and removal, it also conducts a complete diagnostic process of the individual wheel and/or the vehicle’s entire wheel set.

With the Innovation Awards, Messe Essen wishes to further promote and embed the awareness of tires and tire-related products and procedures as a sustainable high-tech product in the mind of the public. Benchmark test criteria included environmental credentials, sustainability, resource conservation, and innovative content. Messe Essen is displaying all applications from candidates during the trade fair in a dedicated area in Hall 7.

Bridgestone Adds 7 Run-Flat Sizes

M-Bridgestone-Driveguard-add-sizes-1Bridgestone Americas Inc. has expanded its DriveGuard run-flat tire line with seven new sizes engineered to fit some of the most popular family vehicles on the road today — minivans, crossover vehicles and sports utility vehicles.

“We introduced the DriveGuard tire line in 2014 for coupes, sedans and wagons,” says Philip Dobbs, chief marketing officer for Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations LLC. “Since then, we heard customers resoundingly say that they wanted that same peace of mind when behind the wheel of their family vehicles – minivans, crossovers and small SUVs. We listened, and we’re excited to make this innovative technology available to more drivers and more vehicles.”
Featuring specially designed run-flat technology, Bridgestone says DriveGuard tires give drivers the ability to continue driving up to 50 miles at up to 50 mph to safety on a flat tire.

With the expanded size offering, the DriveGuard tire line from Bridgestone now fits more than 80% of minivans and 43% of crossovers and small SUVs – the fastest growing vehicle segment. The additional DriveGuard tire sizes arrive in stores May 1, 2016, in the U.S. and Canada.

Designed to deliver a quiet, comfortable ride and provide all season traction, DriveGuard tires come with a 50,000 to 60,000 mile treadwear warranty. DriveGuard tires are available in 43 sizes, 15 to 19 rim diameters.

Bridgestone commissioned a survey conducted online by Harris Poll in April 2016 among 2,109 U.S. adults. Results indicated 73% of drivers on the road today have experienced a flat tire, and 90% agree getting a flat tire would disrupt their day. The survey also revealed that nearly three quarters of drivers (72%) would be willing to pay more for tires that would allow them to continue driving up to 50 miles at up to 50 mph on a flat.

While the survey shows more than half of drivers (57%) claim they know how to change a flat tire, nearly three in five (58%) drivers have called someone for help. Only 34% of women say they know how to change a flat tire, compared to 82% of men who say the same. The majority of Americans (68%) indicated changing a tire on the side of a busy road is the biggest safety hazard of a flat tire.
