New General Grabber Tire Designed for All Purposes

M-General-GrabberAPT-BSW-Rt3Q-8-72-1-2.jpg

The new General Grabber APT from Continental Tire the Americas LLC is an all-purpose-terrain tire designed for on-road, off-road and snow performance.

The General Grabber APT is the newest member of the Grabber family of light truck and SUV tires. It is positioned in a spot that was not filled in the current Grabber product portfolio.

Continental says that on the aggressiveness chart, the Grabber APT holds the spot in between the current all-terrain G Grabber AT2 and the highway-terrain G Grabber HTS60. This tire is the perfect blend of all-terrain, off-road capability and excellent on-road performance designed for all weather conditions, according to the company.

Travis Roffler, director of marketing for the General brand, expects the Grabber APT will be a popular tire for those drivers looking for a tire that is mostly driven on the road during the week but can hold its own during weekend adventures. “It offers the best of both worlds with very strong on-road manners but still enough off-road capability to get the job done.”

The new Grabber APT features three exclusive General technologies.

Comfort Balance Technology provides a cushioned tread that absorbs road disturbances for a more comfortable and pleasant ride. Grooves in the tread are angled away from the center grooves to help dissipate sound which provides a quiet ride.
StabiliTread Technology promotes even wear and longer tread life via even pressure distribution and a robust tread compound.
DuraGen Technology offers high strength construction for impressive durability in off-road situations and delivers cut and chip performance on rough surfaces.
The Grabber APT is available in 26 replacement articles in mostly metric sizes of 16 inches to 22 inches. Two additional tires are OE fitments for the Nissan Titan. A 60,000-mile limited tread wear warranty supports the tire along with Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake Certification. Sidewall styling is available in black and outline white letter.

Facts to Consider When Buying Tires

Snow-Tires-Update-Gear-Patrol-LeadThere may be more to your tires than you think—and it goes well beyond seasonality and vehicle type. Today’s consumer has a lot of options and many factors to consider beyond the happy-go-lucky summer tire. We talk to Jim Davis, tire expert and Goodyear® public relations manager, to shed some light on the subject.

“Tires really matter—the four tires on a vehicle are the only points that touch the road surface. A tire has to transmit grip, traction, cornering performance, braking and ride—in any weather.” So, it’s worth the investment.

All-Season Tires
This jack-of-all-trades tire may or may not be right for you. “The decision to use winter tires versus summer or all-season tires is a personal decision,” Davis says. “A consultation with a local tire retailer is a good idea. Much of the decision is dependent upon the expected weather conditions a driver will face and the level of driving confidence he or she feels when driving in inclement weather, especially severe winter conditions.”

Winter Tires
Snow, slush, ice—even just cold, dry streets—are all enemies of traction. The tread compound in winter tires is made to remain pliable in temperatures below 45°F, and grooves are widened for heightened grip in the slipperiest of conditions. “Regions that typically get a lot of snow and ice, or high elevation areas, can be good prospects for winter tire use. Also, many drivers with rear-wheel drive cars, especially sporty cars with summer ultra-high performance tires, may want to consider using winter tires,” Davis says.

All-Terrain Tires
Not meant for city slickers, all-terrain tires are best suited for pickups and SUVs, Davis says, even those that spend most of their time on the highway. “[They give] the driver the ability to go off-road at times—perhaps for camping, hunting, etc. These are typically tires that feature more open space in the traction lugs and grooves of the tread, and are ideal for operating in rugged terrain on occasion.”

Run-Flat Tires
Want to lose that spare tire in your trunk? Consider run-flat tires, designed to keep on rolling far enough to get you to a service station or safe place if you run low on tire pressure. “Run-flat tires typically have a reinforced sidewall, meaning it can support the weight of the vehicle even with zero air pressure. This feature allows the driver, in most cases, to continue driving for a limited distance at a moderate speed,” Davis says.

Sport Performance Tires
If you like speed and precision, and you’ve got the sporty or touring car to match—which likely came with sport performance tires originally—look into these beauts. “These tires match the car’s focus on driving features such as steering response, excellent grip and cornering precision,” Davis tells us.

Fuel Efficient Tires
Owning a hybrid is not the only way to cut back on fuel costs. “Tires identified as ‘fuel-efficient’ typically have tread compounds that help them to achieve lower rolling resistance,” Davis says, which means they use less energy. Basically, you cover more ground without burning more fuel. Here’s Davis’s tip: “Keeping your tires properly inflated is one of the fastest, easiest and least expensive ways to improve your vehicle’s fuel efficiency.”

All these features, in most cases, can be mixed and matched—summer sport performance tires that are run-flats, for example. It’s about finding the right balance. “A tire store salesperson can provide recommendations based on the type of vehicle, the driving behaviors of the consumer and the various features desired (maximum grip, long tread wear, fuel efficiency, etc.), but in the end the purchase decision is up to the buyer.”

Michelin Adds 2 Sizes to BF Goodrich K02 Tires

tire-all-terrain-t-a-ko2-hero.png

Michelin North America Inc. has released two new sizes of the BFGoodrich brand All-Terrain T/A KO2 tire. The additions are LT255/75R17 for the Jeep Wrangler and the 35×12.50R20 replacement tire for light trucks.

The tire is now available in 64 sizes. Since its launched in late 2014, more than 5.3 million KO2 tires have been sold in North America, according to Michelin.

The company says the KO2 delivers exceptional toughness, tread life and traction for traversing harsh conditions, including gravel, dirt, rock, mud and snow. Key features include tougher sidewalls that are up to 20% tougher than the predecessor tire due to CoreGard technology. The company says the technology results in split and bruise-resistant sidewall rubber and a thicker, extended shoulder that prevent sidewall failures.

The tire also has longer tread life with a new design and rubber formulation that helps it last twice as long on gravel and 15% longer on asphalt than the tire it replaced. In addition, the tread rubber has been optimally blended to reduce chips and tears on gravel.

The KO2 also has a range of tread features for better mud and snow traction. The improvements to the all-terrain performance include 10% greater traction in the mud and 19% greater traction in the snow compared to the previous-generation KO tire.

The all-season tire carries the 3 Peak Mountain Snowflake symbol, indicating that the KO2 exceeds the Rubber Manufacturer Association’s severe snow traction requirements.

The KO2 fits a range of vehicles, including Ford, Chevrolet, GMC, Dodge, Jeep, Toyota and Nissan pickup trucks and SUVs as well as plus fitments for a wide variety of vehicles.

Yokohama Tire to Release Geolandar AT-S Tires

Yokohama Tire Corp. (YTC) has introduced the Geolandar A/T G015 in 60 sizes with a 60,000-mile treadwear warranty for P/E-metric sizes and 50,000-mile warranty for LT-metric sizes.

YTC plans to add 17 more sizes to the line by the end of 2016. All sizes will be certified for severe snow conditions and stamped with the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol. The new tire replaces the Geolandar AT-S.

Dealers will find the price of the new tire comparable to the tire it replaces, the Geolandar AT-S. The similar pricing is a statement of the new tire’s value, according to Bob Abram, product planning manager.

“The Geolandar A/T G015 delivers outstanding traction in any condition, both on road and off,” says Andrew Briggs, senior director of tire business planning, product planning and sales operations. “It’s the toughest and most versatile Geolandar yet and it’s built to last, providing some of the best mileage in the industry.”
