DENVER (March 4, 2015) — A bill in the Colorado House of Representatives that would require either snow tires with adequate tread or tire chains on the main east-west interstate highway in Colorado has passed in a House committee.
House Bill 15-1173 passed the Colorado House Energy and Transportation Committee Feb. 18 by an 8-5 vote.
The bill’s provisions would be in effect from Nov. 1 until May 15 on the 126-mile stretch of Interstate 70 between the towns of Morrison and Dotsero.
According to the legislation, motorists on that section of I-70 during the designated time period must have:
• Tires that bear the manufacturer’s mountain-snowflake symbol and a tread depth of at least 4/32 inch; or
• Tires that bear the manufacturer’s M+S or M/S symbol and a tread depth of at least 4/32 inch; or
• Tire chains or a traction control device.
Commercial vehicles are exempt from the provisions of the bill. Motorists who violate the bill’s provisions would be subject to a $100 fine, plus a $32 surcharge.
