Winter Tire Air Pressure and TPMS

Whether or not the National Football League finds the New England Patriots guilty of cheating in the “Deflategate” scandal (“Of course they cheated,” said one of my friends, an avowed Patriots fan), one truth came out of the debate. As the temperature drops, so does inflation pressure.
According to Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., air pressure in a tire typically changes 1 to 2 psi for every 10 degrees of temperature change.

Today, it is 1 degree-Fahrenheit in Northeast Ohio. If my tires were filled at 34 psi last week when it was 31 degrees, they could be as low as 28 psi.

If they were filled a month ago when it was 51 degrees, well, you get the picture. Not surprisingly, a lot of tire pressure monitoring system dashboard lights are scaring drivers in my area, and probably many of yours as well.

“A tire pressure sensor is in each tire, and if it senses 4 pounds of pressure below the recommended pressure, it will make the light come on,” said Ken Rogers, a service manager for one of Conrad’s Tire Service Inc.’s 34 Conrad’s Tire Express & Total Car Care outlets.
